Tip of the Week for March 12, 2012

This Week's Tip:

Everyone is motivated to work. For example, I work because it fulfills my life, connects me with incredible people, and I love my job. I also work because I take home a paycheck. Students on the spectrum, no matter what age, should be extrinsically motivated to perform well at school if they are not motivated by innate reasons. A token economy is a system of behavior modification based on the systematic positive reinforcement of a target behavior. To use a token economy system, first identify a target behavior that you want to increase or decrease and take baseline data, which indicates how frequently the behavior is occurring during the day. Next, identify motivators the student values and has access to at school (please approve these items or activities with parents). Then establish specific behaviors the student will need to perform in order to attain his reward. The student should receive some kind of visual (check mark, star, etc) indication he is achieving his goal throughout the day. At first make the goal quickly attainable (within one day) so the student can begin to understand how the system works (i.e. I act appropriately at school = I am rewarded), then gradually increase the time between appropriate behavior and the reward. Keep in mind, when you increase the time in between the action and reward you will need to make the reward more desirable.
