Tip of the Week for March 5, 2012

This Week's Tip:

This week's tip is another tip written for professionals working with individuals on the spectrum and their families. It comes from the book, Just Give Him The Whale!: 20 Ways to Use Fascinations, Areas of Expertise, and Strengths to Support Students with Autism, by Paula Kluth. Many individuals on the spectrum have strong special interests, and these have been identified as one of the most powerful ways to motivate an individual. As a result, teachers and parents are well advised to incorporate special interest areas in their work with students with autism. For example, A student who's high interest is in science fiction, video games, and music would much rather multiply and divide X-wing fighter planes (Star Wars) than just numbers.
