New Featured Artist: Pamela Smith-Hudson! |

Enkaustikos is pleased to introduce to you Pamela Smith-Hudson. Pam is part of our Enkaustikos team. Pam wears two hats for us; she is a Creative Consultant for Enkaustikos serving Southern California and she is a certified Enkaustikos Instructor.
Pamela Smith-Hudson is a painter and printmaker. Growing up in southern California, Pam's early influences derived from the Art Poetry Punk scene of Los Angeles in the Eighties. She is a UCLA graduate, where she studied art, design, art history, film and dance. Pam's creative process is intuitive, and spontaneous, working in a deconstructive manner. For the last fourteen years she has worked in the Art Materials World as a demonstrator, teacher, lecturer, consultant, and as a manufacturer representative. We are very excited to have Pam join our team. Her knowledge, enthusiasm and talents are most valuable. Please read our interview with Pam.

XD Wax Medium
|

Enkaustikos manufactures three versions of wax medium. We have our original Wax Medium, which is the base of all our paints. We have a new Natural Yellow Wax Medium. Both Wax Medium and Natural Yellow Wax Medium have a 6:1 ratio of USP Beeswax to Damar Resin. We also produce XD Wax Medium. XD means e Xtra Damar due to a very high concentration of damar resin added to the USP Grade Beeswax in order to make a harder paint film. XD Wax Medium has a 1:1 ratio of beeswax to damar resin. XD is recommended as a topcoat and for making glazes when an extra glossy surface is desired. XD is also an excellent choice for coating digital art, watercolors and photographs.
A few reasons why damar resin is added to beeswax is to raise melting point of beeswax, add translucency and to provide a harder finish. The more damar resin added to beeswax, the harder the medium becomes. Therefore, it is a good idea to work on a rigid support, especially where thick applications are used. This will help prevent undesired cracking. However, you will find that when XD is thinly applied and thoroughly absorbed into paper it does not crack and is not brittle.
XD is not only used as a top coat or to enhance your paints. You can easily make your own wax medium with XD.
Here is how to make your own beeswax and damar resin wax medium in any concentration without the laborious task of filtering damar resin. Simply use Enkaustikos XD Wax Medium like you would use a bouillon cube in cooking.
XD Wax Medium comes in a 1 fl. oz disc. (Our Canadian artists prefer to call them pucks). Starting with 4 discs of XD, add the following amount of refined beeswax to make your desired beeswax to damar formulation.
14 oz. of beeswax will yield an 8 to 1 ratio
12 oz. of beeswax will yield a 7 to 1 ratio 10 oz. of beeswax will yield a 6 to 1 ratio 8 oz. of beeswax will yield a 5 to 1 ratio 6 oz. of beeswax will yield a 4 to 1 ratio 4 oz. of beeswax will yield a 3 to 1 ratio 2 oz. of beeswax will yield a 2 to 1 ratio
*Enkaustikos recommends using either white or natural yellow U.S. Pharmaceutical Grade Beeswax.
XD is available in Hot Sticks, Wax Snaps, 1.5 & 6 fl oz Hot Cakes, 8 & 16 oz refills as well as 5 &10 lb bulk.
