 Women Owned Businesses

Introducing Mighty Plumber

brought to you by:

Allison Chen, Account Executive

As a woman in business, I am always looking for inspirational women to learn from and model myself and my business practices after. Sheryl Sandberg and the "Lean In" movement of the past year has been motivating for me. I've learned a lot from working for a business woman and mom here at Marrs Maddocks, Nancy Maddocks. Nancy has been and continues to be an example to many women employees, past and present.  Diana Witt is a Woman Business Owner and one of our long-time clients. She is highlighted in the video above.

The increase in the number of women owned businesses is meaningful to me. I am a mom of 3 daughters. Demonstrating and teaching my daughters about women in leadership and entrepreneurial positions, will hopefully influence my girls to become leaders and influencers for good in their own journeys.

This article is a great intro to statistics around women owned businesses by Caron Beesley from the U.S. Small Business Association:

There's no doubt about it, women are a rising force in American entrepreneurship. Here are some fast facts on women-owned businesses:

  • The latest Census data indicates that 7.8 million U.S. businesses are owned by women. This represents a stunning 44% increase from 1997-2007, twice the growth rate of men-owned businesses.
  • Women-owned firms now make up close to a third (29%) of all nonfarm businesses across the country.
  • These firms generate a total of $1.2 trillion annually and employ 7.6 million people.

Clearly, women-owned firms are not in the minority. Neither are they a small niche market, but they are a major force in the U.S. economy.

MM+A Client Spotlight:

HofArc: A Dream Come True

Airstreams & Architecture

The story of HofArc starts with its founder, Matthew Hofmann (6) building a six-story tree house in his Eastern High Sierra backyard with his Dad.

Today, HofArc (abbreviated from Hofmann Architecture) is famous worldwide as a leader in vintage trailer designs and renovations.  Since opening their doors in 2011, HofArc's crew has designed and rebuilt more than 60 custom Airstreams, valued from $30,000 to more than $150,000 each for clients around the world.  HofArc's designs are being admired and copied by more than the Airstream fanatics, too.

While there are many small Airstream renovators, HofArc is unique because they were a licensed Architectural firm, designing homes and commercial buildings.

"For the past two decades Matthew's been hooked on design," said his partner and father Wally.  "From tree houses, to luxury homes, and now Airstreams."  At the young age 26, Matthew was licensed to practice Architecture.

Matthew designed and built his first Airstream for himself as a home office.  "I realized the Airstream was a great way to reduce my overhead and simplify my life as I ventured out on my own," he explained.  "I parked my Airstream on a piece of ocean view property overlooking the Pacific.  For the next year the Airstream was my full-time home/office - but the experience changed my life forever."

His motivation for living simply is why he started the Airstream renovation firm.  "The view was stunning and the living was simple," he added.  "Doing what I love, with people I love, in a place I love - it is a dream come true."

Take a look at the Hofmann's work at www.HofArc.com.  HofArc also operates a hip, popular Airstream hotel in Santa Barbara, with five vintage Airstreams available for nightly rentals.  Check out www.AutoCamp.com for reservations and details.
