"Upper Hudson Valley Beer"--Author Talk, Saturday, November 1, 3:00 PM
From Dutch settlers t o 21st Century crafters, people have been brewing beer in the Hudson Valley for more than 400 years. That fascinating history is described in Upper Hudson Valley Beer, a new book by Craig Gravina and Alan McLeod. Their book--and the years of research that went into it--are the subject of a free talk at the Chatham Public Library on Saturday, November 1 at 3 pm.
Gravina, who lives in Albany, will speak for his Canadian co-author. He calls himself "a world class beer drinker" who stumbled upon the brewing history of his hometown while writing a blog about beer. He was surprised to learn that Albany was once the beer capital of North America and that Albany Ale was exported around the world.
Although many historic breweries went out of business during the years of Prohibition, craft brewing experienced a renaissance in the Upper Hudson Valley in the 1980s. Chatham Brewing, which is covered in the book, is part of that popular movement.
Sponsored by the Friends of the Chatham Public Library, Gravina's talk is part of the non-profit group's monthly Authors and Artists series. It is free of charge and open to the public. A question and answer session and a book signing will follow the talk.
Everyone who attends the library event will receive a ticket for admittance to a back room at Chatham Brewing for a free beer tasting and other refreshments immediately after the talk. A drawing for a free copy of Upper Hudson Valley Beer will take place at the brewery.

CONTEMPORARY ART READING & DISCUSSION GROUP with Melissa Sarris
Monday
November 3
6:00--7:45 pm
Theme will be "The Label of Artist." Depending on the medium an artist works in, their output isn't usually questioned. Painting is a good example of this. In a world where social practice and other esoteric forms of conceptual art are now part of the contemporary art cannon, confusion is possible for the layman. Confused already? Come to the library to learn more and check out the blog at: ChathamArtAgency.blogspot.com
This program is made possible with public funds from the Decentralization Program of NYS Council on the Arts, administered in Columbia County by the Greene County Council on the Arts through the Community Arts Grant Fund.
