Preschool Story Hour
Fridays: 10:00 am

July 11, 18, and 25
 
Come make new friends by bringing your preschooler to story hour. Children will listen to books, sing songs, recite fingerplays, play musical games and do a craft related to the story theme.

The Museum Pass Program has EXPANDED... 
Thanks to the Friends of the Chatham Public Library, we now have passes to 20 museums and historic sites. These passes provide FREE admission, typically for several people, and can be borrowed by Chatham and Canaan library card holders for three days.

In addition, the library has two North American Reciprocal Museum (NARM) passes that admit patrons to many other venues such as The Mount (home of Edith Wharton), the Shaker Museum and Library, the Saratoga Automobile Museum, Hildene (Lincoln family home), and many more - ask to see the list at the desk. NARM passes can also be used in place of some library passes that have been checked out by other patrons.

From June 23rd to August 15th, we offer many programs which will delight and inspire you. We have so much to share with you! Each child will receive a log to track their reading, or time read to--visit the library and update us on your progress! Incentives will be awarded at the end of the summer. Registration is required for all programs.


Art Programs:


HANDS IN CLAY,
July 8, Tues, ages 4 to 7

Local artist Caren Behn is back with another fun clay project.

MARBLE PAINTING AND BOOK MAKING
July 16 & 17, Wed & Thurs

Local artist Ulricke Grannis is back this summer to share her bookbinding skills and teach us the ancient art of marbleized paper.

EXTENDING YOUR ABILITIES--A WIRE SCULPTURE PROJECT
July 23, 24, & 25, Wed thru Fri
1:00-2:30 pm
Do you ever wish you had an extra hand or that you could jump higher? What characteristics do animals have that intrigue you? What qualities dos a robot have? Join Local artist Melissa Sarris as you let your imagination help you design a sculpture using wire (for ages 8 & up).

BUTTERFLY SLIDE SHOW
July 21, Mon
1:00-2:00 pm
Jerry Schneider will be leading this program on Eastern butterflies, exploring their interesting characteristics, differences from moths, and unique designs. The program will conclude with a t-shirt craft using butterfly and plant cut-outs, and fabric paint. For ages 5 & up. Bring a t-shirt or buy one for $4.00 from Jerry.

Science and Technology Programs:

AMAZING ROBOTICS
July 28, Mon
2:00-3:30 pm
Low-tech robotics expert Kathy Ceceri will show kids how to build a variety of working robot projects from everyday materials Workshop participants will get to design, build and take home their own motorized ArtBot that hops, wiggles and spins across a sheet of paper, drawing as it goes! For ages 8 & up.

FIZZ, BOOM, WEATHER
July 29 to Aug 1, Tues thru Fri
1:30-3:00 pm
Through fun and interactive experiments, students will gain a better understanding of weather, electricity and sound. Alana Brandon from Cornell Cooperative Extension will be leading these sessions. For ages 6 to 10.
We need a minimum of 8 students to run this program.

WE DO ROBOTICS
Aug 4 thru 8, Mon thru Fri
1:30--2:30 pm
Using the intuitive software,LEGO Education WeDo, participants will learn how to construct and bring their models to life. Working together, children will create a final project with the guidance of Alana Brandon of the Cornell Cooperative Extension. For ages 6 to 10
.
We need a minimum of 8 students for this program, who can attend all the sessions.

Einstein's Favorite Fairy Tales
Aug 13, Wed
6:30 pm
Minstrel storyteller Mary Jo Maichack will perform an interactive family program of songs and folktales especially recommended for children ages 4 & up. Refreshments will be served and reading prizes distributed as we celebrate the end of the summer reading program.

Our Summer Reading Program is sponsored by the Friends of the Chatham Public Library and the Decentralization Program of the New York State Council on the Arts, which is administered through the Twin Counties Cultural Fund by the Columbia Couny Council on the Arts.

Memoir Writing Workshop

A peer led writing group is being formed to provide comment and review on the process of memoir writing. If you are interested in taking part, contact Al Stumph at 392-2618, or astumph@fairpoint.net Times and frequency of future meetings will be determined by the participants.
 
Contemporary Art Reading and Discussion Group News

The Contemporary Art Reading and Discussion Group has gone on summer vacation. In the meantime, please check out the Chatham Art Agency blog to find out what books we are reading and what is happening with the Agency. We will begin our meetings again in September.

 

What's next? The Audio Walking tour of Chatham: your interesting, funny, sad, personal, or?... stories that occurred at a particular place in the Village of Chatham edited and then ordered to create a tour of our community.
