Help Wanted!

Are you someone who enjoys children and who has been affirmed for your gifts with children? The DUMC Children's Program could use your help this summer! Here is what is needed:

1 helper every Sunday during the summer. Sunday School assistants are responsible for helping the children participate in their activities in a more traditional Sunday School setting. Does not require the ability to sit on the floor!

July 17th Special Offering:
Aid to Africa

This month's special offering will benefit three projects in Africa:  Africa University, Fairfield Children's Homes in Zimbabwe, and Ganta Hospital in Liberia.

Larry and Jane Kies are UMC missionaries in Zimbabwe.  The Kies' attended our church while studying at UCD, and our church has had a covenant relationship with them for many years.  Africa University is a Methodist-affiliated, Pan-African university.  The school has over 40% international students and 51% are female.  Its mission is to provide for the acquisition of general and professional skills in the context of sound spiritual and moral practices.

Fairfield Children's Homes, also located near Mutare, provides love and care for approximately 80 abandoned and orphaned children.  The original orphanage was built on land donated by the UMC and this project receives both volunteer and financial support from UM churches around the world.

Ganta UM Hospital in Liberia also has a local connection as UMC missionary Victor Taryor, who until recently was hospital administrator, spent time in Davis as well.  Before the establishment of Ganta Hospital in 1926, this rural area had no medical services at all.  In addition to providing health services to over 30,000 people in Liberia, Guinea, and Ivory Coast, the hospital implements safe water and sanitation projects.  The hospital also trains nurses and birth attendants to serve a wide area of rural villages.  Ganta rode out the Ebola outbreak in Liberia and treated several patients with the disease.  Ganta is badly in need of funds to renovate buildings and increase preventative health services.

Please support these important projects.

Historical Notes
By Kathy Schinski, DUMC Historian

As we await the arrival of Pastor Brandon this summer, we mark the departure of Jean Becket, who has been a very active, long term member of Davis United Methodist Church, and a great friend to many of us. We recognized some of her contributions to DUMC last July at her 90th birthday celebration held in the Fellowship Hall. Here is a more detailed biography and appreciation of her service to DUMC and the Davis Community. Read More

Grace Garden Update

The garden is surviving the heat and still producing. We've harvested 122 pounds of vegetables and 50 pounds of fruit. Those numbers will go up once the nectarines, pluots and peaches are ripe. And, of course, when the zucchini start growing out of control. Read More

New Fellowship Coordinator Needed

After 14 years, Marilyn Hoppes is retiring from her volunteer position of Fellowship Coordinator. We are now looking for someone to take her place (starting in July). The job is fairly simple - arrange which one of our many wonderful Fellowship hosts (there is a list which can be passed on) is willing to provide snacks each Sunday (two hosts per week for the two different services). This can be done on a weekly basis (as has been past practice) or once a month depending on personal preference. Additionally, it can be done by phone, email, or online sign-up. If this is a job you would be willing to take on, contact Anna in the office at davisumc@davisumc.org.

Bike and Build Dinner
August 6th

It is that time of year again! The Bike and Build team is on their route headed for Davis already! Right now they are in Colorado Springs for a full week building a house! They stop to build three more times - elsewhere in Colorado, in Utah, and in Idaho - before they begin heading south from Oregon into California. They will be in Davis on August 6th!

If you'd like to see their route, you can follow along on their website:

On July 24th and the 31st we will have signup sheets ready so you can sign up to bring food for our dinner with them. Please put the date on your calendar! Consider signing up to bring food, and joining us for dinner that evening to hear about their travel adventures!
