Join Opening Doors for a Community Conversation

When: Saturday, June 25th, 4-6 pm
Where: Lutheran Church of the Incarnation
1701 Russell Blvd

The plight of victims of trafficking and refugees in Europe and the Middle East has captured headlines across the country. However, these stories unfold daily in Central Valley communities. Opening Doors, a Greater Sacramento nonprofit, is a leader in resettling refugees from Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria. We also provide services to men, women, and children who have been trafficked into slavery so they can emerge as survivors. Programs in financial education and micro-enterprise assistance help all, both new Americans and native-born, to improve their financial situations.

Please join us for a community conversation and learn more about how Opening Doors has become part of the solution. We will share the services we provide and let you know how Davis residents can get involved.

Wine and hors d'oeuvres will be served and members of our staff will be on hand to answer questions after a brief presentation.

2. Contemporary Issues Forum THIS SUNDAY

The adult forum is beginning a book study that should interest the whole congregation.  In 2015 Pope Francis released the Catholic encyclical "Laudato Si': On Care for Our Common Home."   The encyclical is directed at people of all faiths, not just Catholics.  Released prior to the Paris Climate Summit, the encyclical was widely reported to be about climate change.  In fact it was much broader in scope.  "Our Common Home" refers to social and economic justice as well as the ecological integrity of the planet.  Most of the encyclical is devoted to explaining why and how Christians must urgently change their lifestyles and mindsets in order to promote social justice and environmental integrity.

This Sunday
we begin a 6-part study of the Pope's encyclical.  Sunday's discussion will be based upon chapter 1 of the printed version of the encyclical, available at local bookstores and online.  The discussion will be meaningful even if you haven't read chapter 1 yet.

2. Welcoming Pastor Brandon, July 3rd

On July 3rd we will be welcoming our new minister, Pastor Brandon. We will have a salad bar lunch after the second service to give people a time to get to know him. You are asked to bring your favorite salad bar item (croutons, shredded carrots, tomatoes, cucumbers, etc.). Lettuce, salad dressings, beverages, and dessert will be provided.

Help Pastor Kelly Move?

Pastor Kelly would be enormously grateful for a few strong backs the afternoon/early evening (depending on temperatures) of Saturday, June 25th to move her books and files from the pastor's study at the church to her home (1 mile away). If you might be available and willing, please call or email: pastorkellylove@gmail.com, 756-2170.

In addition, some help might be needed or appreciated to pack books into boxes, earlier on the 25th or on some day prior, to be determined. Also, if you have any banker/file boxes, book boxes, or copy paper boxes, Pastor Kelly would be grateful to take those off your hands!

2. New Fellowship Coordinator Needed

DUMC is looking for a new Fellowship Coordinator, starting in July. The job is fairly simple - arrange which one of our many wonderful Fellowship hosts (there is a list) is willing to provide snacks each Sunday (two hosts per week for the two different services). This can be done on a weekly basis or once a month depending on personal preference. Additionally, it can be done by phone, email, or online sign-up. If this is a job you would be willing to take on, contact Anna in the office at  davisumc@davisumc.org.

3. Help Wanted!

Are you someone who enjoys children and who has been affirmed for your gifts with children? The DUMC Children's Program could use your help this summer! Here is what is needed:
  • 1 helper every Sunday during the summer. Sunday School assistants are responsible for helping the children participate in their activities in a more traditional Sunday School setting. Does not require the ability to sit on the floor!
Interested in helping?

Contact Jeri Viera Dahlke at (916) 947-1102 or kidsministry@davisumc.org

4. Solar Buyout Update

The church currently leases our solar panels from the investor who installed them, but if we can buy the panels we'll save lots of money.  We're close to our goal of $33,000 to buy the system....only about $3,000 left to go.  The fundraising campaign ends June 30th so please hurry with your contribution or pledge.  Send checks to the church with "solar buyout" in the Memo line.  This is your chance to help the church and care for God's creation.

5. VBC Thank-You

What an amazing week our 12 children had at Vacation Bible Camp! Though we kept it in-house only this year, there was tons of laughter, bible stories, yoga, fellowship, beauty, singing, dancing, delicious and nutritious snacks, opportunities to help others. In fact, it looks like we will be taking 3 large full bags of food to help those in need! What made this all possible? It was because of the talented folks who matched their time availability with their own and matched their gifts with the needs we had. If you see any of these great people, ask them about their experience and please give them your thanks!
