This Sunday, June 12th
Worship at 8:30 and 11:00 am

We often speak of faith as a journey - as indeed life itself is a journey. With this in mind, how might we describe the road we have travelled these last five years? What has your own spiritual journey held during this time? What has DUMC's collective journey as a congregation held during this time? And what does this tell us about the journeys God has yet in store for us?

You can sign up after services on the 12th or email Lorraine at [email protected] to volunteer to bring an item.

4. Join Opening Doors for a Community Conversation

When: Saturday, June 25th, 4-6 pm
Where: Lutheran Church of the Incarnation
1701 Russell Blvd

PLEASE RSVP to [email protected]

The plight of victims of trafficking and refugees in Europe and the Middle East has captured headlines across the country. However, these stories unfold daily in Central Valley communities. Opening Doors, a Greater Sacramento nonprofit, is a leader in resettling refugees from Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria. We also provide services to men, women, and children who have been trafficked into slavery so they can emerge as survivors. Programs in financial education and micro-enterprise assistance help all, both new Americans and native-born, to improve their financial situations.

Please join us for a community conversation and learn more about how Opening Doors has become part of the solution. We will share the services we provide and let you know how Davis residents can get involved.

Wine and hors d'oeuvres will be served and members of our staff will be on hand to answer questions after a brief presentation.

Announcements
1. Children and Youth Thank-You

In worship we will give thanks to God for those who volunteered their time and energy to the children and youth of the church during the 2015-2016 year. Over forty people lived and taught the love of Jesus Christ with and to the young people.

2. Help Pastor Kelly Move?

Pastor Kelly would be enormously grateful for a pickup truck and a few strong backs the afternoon/early evening (depending on temperatures) of Saturday, June 25th to move her books and files from the pastor's study at the church to her home (1 mile away). If you might be available and willing, please call or email: [email protected], 756-2170.

In addition, some help might be needed or appreciated to pack books into boxes, earlier on the 25th or on some day prior, to be determined. Also, if you have any banker/file boxes, book boxes, or copy paper boxes, Pastor Kelly would be grateful to take those off your hands!

3. IRWS Volunteers Needed

Can you contribute 2-5 hours a month?  Only your time, caring and thought are required.  IRWS feeds and houses 150 homeless guests each season.  We are looking for team members to support the ongoing work of shelter operations.  All teams will have the support and guidance of the board.  From the specific tasks below, which one might call to you?
  • The Host Site Team coordinates support of hosting congregations, fire inspections, online volunteer signups, hospitality supplies, and truck rental.
  • The Shelter Operations Team coordinates and maintains needed supplies, printed forms, the Intake process, and shelter phones and Wi-Fi access.
  • The Community Engagement Team coordinates connections in the community, contacting prospective donors, mentoring guests to find services, organizational visits at the shelter, and fundraising.

Will you help with just one of these tasks?  Whichever you choose, you won't be working alone.  Learn more about these and other opportunities to serve.  Come to an informational meeting Monday, June 13, 7:00PM (location to be announced). Let us know you are interested at [email protected]

4. Letter from Lefty Schultz

Dear Friends at Davis UMC,

This has been a very difficult three weeks for the Schultz family. So far as we knew, Kevin was the very
picture of good health- he worked out, he ate a very nutritious diet, he was full of love, caring, and compassion. He loved his dear Martha and beloved 3 year old son, Lukas. Yet I know as the tears continue to flow, that in a mortal sense, he is gone.

In some small part, I like to think it was the years we lived in Davis and served in your midst that gave him a feel of "being church" (even if he lived with the knowledge that he was a PK) that led him, Martha, and Lukas to Sojourner Truth Presbyterian Church in Richmond. He was serving his first year as an elder
when he died.

The phone calls and cards Barbara and I have received from you have been a source of comfort and healing in the midst of great sadness. I know that Martha and Lukas appreciate your prayers as well.

Several of you have inquired about memorial gifts, and I am presently exploring a couple of options with Martha - including the possibility of contributions to Lukas ' college fund.

Again we are so grateful for your love and support.

Shalom,

Lorenz "Lefty" and Barbara Schultz
Pastor, Davis UMC, 1978-1986

5. New Fellowship Coordinator Needed

DUMC is looking for a new Fellowship Coordinator, starting in July. The job is fairly simple - arrange which one of our many wonderful Fellowship hosts (there is a list) is willing to provide snacks each Sunday (two hosts per week for the two different services). This can be done on a weekly basis or once a month depending on personal preference. Additionally, it can be done by phone, email, or online sign-up. If this is a job you would be willing to take on, contact Anna in the office at  [email protected].
