A "LOVE" NOTE...
(from your pastor)
| |
Dear DUMC Friends, As I enter my final weeks with you, I have been doing much reflection on my time with you over these five years. Some of this reflection took place together with the Church Council at the Council's May meeting. I thought I would share just a few of my reflections with you all. One aspect of Davis UMC that has delighted me in my time with you is the abundance of ideas and hopes you all have. The people of this church have a constant desire to do more, and that energy is wonderful. It's okay that you can't always do everything you would like; that is much better than if you did not feel a need or desire to stretch and do more. This church demonstrates a deep and thoughtful faith; a passion to make a difference in the world, and a real care for one another and the well-being of the relationships that form this community. I have been most aware of God's presence and movement in our midst at those times when we really, truly, listen to one another. People share stories and beliefs and convictions, and engage in deep conversation about faith and values - the "why" behind what we do. These are the conversations that lead to moments of profound gratitude and hope and vision. And in these conversations, and in this listening, I sense God's presence celebrating with us and shaping us. Finally, as I was reflecting on that Church Council conversation after the fact, I was left feeling that I didn't adequately express my gratitude for the abundant blessings of my time here with you. I have stretched and grown in my time with you, and I am grateful for all that I have learned. I trust that, thanks to all of you, I have developed some new or improved skills that will serve me well in future ministries. And I am grateful! See you in church! In Faith,

June 5th Special Offering:
Reconciling Ministries Network and Human Relations Sunday
Our special offering this month will benefit the Reconciling Ministries Network (RMN), the Reconciling Ministry of our church and Human Relations projects in the UMC. Davis UMC is part of the RMN, which includes United Methodist individuals, congregations, campus ministries, and other groups working for the full participation of all people in the United Methodist Church regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. It strives to remove discriminatory policies that still exist.
The offering for Human Relations Sunday is denomination-wide in the United Methodist Church. We seek, through our giving, to lift up the marginalized of society. These funds are used, for example, to nurture at-risk youth and advocate for the oppressed. The Community Developers' program supports many of these efforts around the United States.

Pathway: Future Directions | |
Launch Sessions
The current phase in the Pathway process is all about implementation. Two more brainstorm and launch sessions remain, both on Saturday June 4th. The first, for service & justice work, will be held from 9:30am to noon. The second, for worship, will be held from 1:00 to 3:30pm. (The launch session for small groups was held on May 21st.) ALL are welcome! If you have any interest in these ministry emphases, please feel warmly invited!
Each launch session includes a plan to carry this ministry work into the future. Each session has offered a model for action, reflection/learning, discernment, and identification of next action. The process is cyclical and self-replicating, meaning that if folks continue to take each step well-chosen and well-designed ministry activity will continue to move forward for as long as there are any volunteers to carry it forward. This has enormous potential to keep these prominent ministry emphases vital and growing for years to come.
If you think you might be interested in working on small groups at DUMC, or service and justice activities at DUMC, or worship, please make sure Anna in the church office has your name and contact info (contact Anna at 756-2170 or davisumc@davisumc.org). If you already signed up for one of these areas in January-March, or if you attended a vision or launch session, we have your name. As the coordinating groups for our current ministry emphases do their work, there will be many points along the way when additional participation will be sought. While we will continue to publish all-church invitations in the Crossection and weekly email news, we have found that sometimes people miss information sent in this way. Knowing you are interested in a particular area(s) will help us do a better job of inviting and including you at various points along the way.
"Pathway" is the name for the long-term process at Davis UMC, examining the life of our church and setting direction for the future. As the plan approved by the Church Council last December states, Davis UMC will be best served by intentionally and systematically embracing our DNA (being spirit-filled, welcoming & affirming, and service & justice oriented), and capitalizing on those activities the church is most energized by (worship, small groups, and church & society/service/justice work). This is the work that is currently underway, and will carry us into the future that God has in store for us.

Historical Notes
By Kathy Schinski, DUMC Historian
As we sadly say farewell to Pastor Kelly Love this month, and get to know our new pastor, Rev. Brandon Austin this summer, I decided to write about the system begun by John Wesley in the 1700's to choose how Methodist pastors are selected for churches. In many Protestant denominations pastors apply to the church they want and if they are offered a job there they can choose to accept or decline. Methodist churches however, use the "itinerant" system. Read More

New Fellowship Coordinator Needed
|
After 14 years, Marilyn Hoppes is retiring from her volunteer position of Fellowship Coordinator. We are now looking for someone to take her place (starting in July). The job is fairly simple - arrange which one of our many wonderful Fellowship hosts (there is a list which can be passed on) is willing to provide snacks each Sunday (two hosts per week for the two different services). This can be done on a weekly basis (as has been past practice) or once a month depending on personal preference. Additionally, it can be done by phone, email, or online sign-up. If this is a job you would be willing to take on, contact Anna in the office at davisumc@davisumc.org.

Grace Garden Update
Another garden season is underway at Grace Garden. All the vegetables have been planted except for the potatoes and a few extra tomato plants we are trying to find places for. We've also planted herbs and flowers to bring in pollinators, and of course, we're busy pulling weeds, spreading compost, and fixing irrigation. Read More

| Davis Chorale Interfaith Vespers Concert, June 12th
|
Now that the Davis Community Church sanctuary's remodel is completed, the Davis Chorale is excited to try out the improved acoustics and to present once again a traditional Vespers concert in that space on Sunday, June 12th at 5 pm.
Due to its variety of music, audience involvement, and short duration, the concert is suitable for families with children. Admission is free, but donations are gratefully accepted.

Join Opening Doors for a Community Conversation
|
|
When: Saturday, June 25th, 4-6 pm
Where: Lutheran Church of the Incarnation
1701 Russell Blvd
The plight of victims of trafficking and refugees in Europe and the Middle East has captured headlines across the country. However, these stories unfold daily in Central Valley communities. Opening Doors, a Greater Sacramento nonprofit, is a leader in resettling refugees from Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria. We also provide services to men, women, and children who have been trafficked into slavery so they can emerge as survivors. Programs in financial education and micro-enterprise assistance help all, both new Americans and native-born, to improve their financial situations.
Please join us for a community conversation and learn more about how Opening Doors has become part of the solution. We will share the services we provide and let you know how Davis residents can get involved.
Wine and hors d'oeurves will be served and members of our staff will be on hand to answer questions after a brief presentation.
