A "LOVE" NOTE...
(from your pastor)
heart

Dear DUMC friends,

As you know, we are in a time of transition. As we now reach the two-month mark of my remaining time with you, I wanted to share a few thoughts with you about the work of transition. There are some things we can do together to navigate this time well; here are just a few that come to mind.
  • Practice reflection and learning. We have spent five years together as congregation and pastor. What might help us glean valuable lessons and understanding as a result of this time together? To this end, I have invited your Church Council to come to our next meeting with questions for me that can help our learning as an organization. What might be helpful to hear from me before I leave? What might we reflect upon together?
  • Prepare to welcome someone new. Your Staff-Parish Relations Committee has done a wonderful job of naming that being welcoming & affirming (one strand of this church's DNA) includes welcoming a new pastor, and making space for him to be himself - which will mean bringing different interests and emphases from mine.
  • In this vein, DUMC leaders can benefit from identifying important roles or characteristics to carry forward - recognizing that some roles I have filled will not necessarily be filled by every pastor. How can the laypeople of the church play their part in carrying forward what matters?
  • Make space for feelings. Each individual will have a different set of emotions related to this transition, and all kinds of emotions come into play: grief as we anticipate good-bye, perhaps some anger at my decision, excitement for a new beginning and new relationship, apprehension about change - and more. I know I myself feel a whole mix of real sadness and grief, joy at reflecting upon our time together, and hopeful anticipation of time off. I hope you all will feel free to feel and share your feelings - with each other and with me.
  • Spend time together. I'm not gone yet - and not quite ready to be. In the time we have remaining, time with you is precious. I am so glad for the invitations to coffee or lunch or a chat in my office that some of you have already initiated. I am so glad that Katie and I have been able to participate in the MixSups this year. So please know that I am very open to these invitations! I am not too busy for time with the church community I have grown to love.
See you in church!

In Faith,
Pastor Kelly signature

p.s. I will be out of town May 26-30, attending my 25-year college reunion. As always, information about who to contact for pastoral care needs will be available from the church office, on the church calendar, in the Thursday email, and in my email vacation auto-reply.

May 15th Special Offering:
Peace with Justice Sunday

Peace with Justice Sunday is one of the six church-wide special Sundays of the United Methodist Church.  Donations support a broad range of programs in the US and around the world.  In this way we sow the seeds and yield the fruits of peace.
Examples of programs supported by this offering in the past are:

  • Methodists spearheading a peace ministry uniting Arizona border communities
  • United Methodists in Liberia being equipped to implement the denomination's Social Principles to address social-justice issue
  • Pennsylvania students educating their community about sex-trafficking at home and abroad
  • The United Methodist Church providing homes for former child soldiers, recreational activities to address war trauma, and basic necessities such as fresh drinking water and medical treatment
  •

Please give generously to support this important mission.

Pathway Update: Bold Visions, Bold Initiatives

Davis UMC's "Pathway" process moves along! Read on for more invitation and an invitation to shape the ministries most important to DUMC: service & justice work; small groups; and worship.

We continue our Pathway process along two parallel tracks in our work to celebrate and strengthen the ministries of this church.

One of the two tracks is to capitalize on those activities the church is most energized by, based on the responses to the congregation-wide "appreciative inquiry" interviews. Our work along this track of "what we do" shows the most recent developments. Three vision sessions were held to develop what we've been calling "bold visions" (what would be called "provocative proposals" in the lingo of Appreciative Inquiry, the model for organizational life we have drawn heavily from). [See below for the complete text of the bold visions themselves.]

Please join us in brainstorming ideas and developing concrete next steps in the area of what we do that is most important to you! And feel free to join all three sessions!
    • Small Groups: Saturday, May 21st, 1:00pm
    • Service and Justice: Saturday, June 4, 9:30am
    • Worship: date TBD (will be set at May 4 worship committee meeting) Watch your Thursday email for details!
Moving along the other of the two tracks, we work to thoroughly embrace our DNA or "who we are." That DNA includes three elements: we are spirit-filled; welcoming and affirming; and service and justice oriented. Most ministry groups have had an initial conversation to examine how their ministry is aligned with the church's DNA - groups from the prayer shawl ministry to the Finance Committee and every sort of group in-between. All ministry groups are encouraged to periodically revisit their alignment with DUMC's DNA of being spirit-filled; welcoming and affirming; and service and justice oriented.

    Service and Justice Bold Vision

The people of Davis United Methodist Church intentionally engage the last, the least, and the lost of our community - actively ministering to them while tirelessly addressing underlying injustice as God leads. Our first focus is local, yet global needs also energize and mobilize us. Actions that are spirit-filled, welcoming and affirming, and service and justice oriented find permission, encouragement, and support here. The scope can be small to large and one-time to ongoing, and can readily draw in others beyond this church.

    Small Groups Bold Vision

Small groups at Davis United Methodist Church embody our congregational DNA - spirit-filled, welcoming and affirming, service and justice orientedOpportunities to participate are widely known within the congregation and the larger community.  Compassionate, non-threatening groups forge relationships to self, others, community and Spirit; individuals of all ages and stages are embraced, known, celebrated and supported.  Groups vary with a rich mix of topics, formats and activities including creative and physical expression as well as theological study and spiritual exploration.  Davis United Methodist Church honors small groups as an essential ministry.

    Worship Bold Vision

Davis United Methodist Church provides worship experiences in which people of all ages and backgrounds are welcomed and actively involved. The Christian tradition is honored and meaningfully placed in our contemporary context. The worship service engages both our intellect and our heart by drawing on the community's artistic, musical, and performance skills to joyfully convey  Jesus' message of service, justice and vitality. We depart having had an opportunity to reflect on the message and are eager to go forth manifesting the love of God in our lives and in the world.

    Historical Notes
    By Kathy Schinski, DUMC Historian

I recently attended the initial "Pathway" meeting on Small  Groups, which is one of the 3 areas found to be most important to Davis UMC members in the"Pathway" survey. Small groups have actually been a major force in Methodism from the very beginning, with the "Class Meetings" set up by John Wesley himself. Read More

    Grace Garden Update

The Annual Plant Sale was a success. We setup in the parking lot, but later moved under the covered patio when the rain started. So many people came out in the rain to buy plants, and we had our best total ever, over $1,000.  If you came to the sale, were there any vegetables or specific varieties that we didn't have? Let us know and we can plant them for next year.

Nine volunteers from iCare worked at Grace Garden Saturday, April 23 with Cid and Gwen. Thanks to so many volunteers all the beds are now planted. Volunteers also painted the Adirondack chairs, garden markers and the fruit tree trunks.  Youth groups from Bet Haverim and Davis United Methodist Church will help plant flower beds soon.

    May is Bike Month!

Calling all bicycles and their riders!! Bring your bicycles to church on Sunday, May 1st. This day will be our "kick-off" for "May Is Bike Month", a month-long effort to encourage each other to ride our bikes more often and drive less. If bicycling is difficult for you, see if you can find someone to carpool with in May. Our goal is to reduce our carbon footprint for May! Check out the Bike Table on Sunday or ask Karen Hudson-Bates for details!

Below are planned activities for the month:

May 1stBring Your Bike to Church Sunday!!
    • Bike Blessing: Pastor Kelly will bless the bikes at the end of each service on the patio near the labyrinth.
    • Bring your bike to our Bike Clinic 9:30 am -1:00 pm! Stop by with your bike and get help or learn how to do simple repairs and adjustments on your bike.
    • Sign up on the May Is Bike Month website: http://www.mayisbikemonth.com/  to log your miles along with the rest of the DUMC riders for the month of May, and help us beat our miles from last year! Join with thousands of bicyclists around the greater Sacramento area in reaching for 2 million miles this year! Check the table after both services for help in signing up.
May 1-31: Ride your bike, and keep track of how many miles you ride for the month!
