A "LOVE" NOTE...
(from your pastor)
| |
As I write, we are just edging into April. But as I think about what the coming weeks will hold, it feels like May is just around the corner. Which means that I am very conscious of the shifting rhythms of work and relationships as I begin to wind down my time with you all. I thought it might be helpful to share a bit about what the coming months will look like.
My focus is different than it has been up until this point. At this time in my tenure with you all, I am focused on laying the groundwork for a constructive transition forward. This primarily means carrying out the current phase of the Pathway process, which will take the congregation to the point of concrete next steps in the areas of our current ministry emphases: service & justice work, small groups, and worship. In addition, I hope that every ministry group of any kind at Davis UMC will have built a sense of how well-aligned they are with the DNA of this church (being spirit-filled, welcoming & affirming, and service & justice-oriented), and will continue to keep that conversation alive as you move forward.
I will be using my remaining vacation and continuing education time between now and the end of June, and thought it might be helpful for you to know my schedule. I will be using a combination of vacation and continuing ed time to be away from April 11th through April 23rd; back with you all on Sunday, April 24th. During that period, first Katie and I will be visiting her parents as they begin preparations to move to their chosen retirement location of Sun City, Arizona. Then I will be participating in the annual clergy retreat run by the "clergy coach" I work with; that will take place in Albuquerque. I will miss one more Sunday with you all the last weekend of May, when I look forward to participating in my 25th college reunion in Pennsylvania.
The Annual Conference Session of the California-Nevada Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church - i.e. the annual, regional gathering of our denomination - will take place June 22nd - 25th. Knowing that this event is both time-consuming and tiring, it seemed wise not to attempt something as significant as my last Sunday on the heels of Annual Conference. So, my last Sunday with you all will be Sunday, June 19th (which happens to also unfortunately be Father's Day). I will have a few workdays left to give to Annual Conference and any last packing up after that Sunday.
Finally, an invitation to you all:
One of the things that is most fun for me is the challenge of crafting sermons that respond to particular questions you have. I love wrestling with some of the stickier issues of our faith, and trying to speak to them in ways that connect with you. So if you have a question you'd like me to explore, or a request for a sermon topic for me to address in my last 3 months with you - don't be shy! What is some topic or scripture you would particularly like to hear me address in a sermon in the remainder of my time here? Now is a great time to let me know.
See you in church!
In Faith,

April Special Offering:
April 17th: Help the Immigrant
Yolo Interfaith Immigration Network and Opening Doors
The Yolo Interfaith Immigration Network, or YIIN, is a nonprofit organization that works with various agencies to assist those whose lives have been affected by immigration. It is comprised of people who serve and advocate for immigrants. YIIN engages in a number of programs to help serve immigrants. For instance, YIIN makes weekly visits to Juvenile Hall to visit unaccompanied minors and as an afterschool program at the Madison Migrant Center. YIIN also endeavors to assist undocumented college students in Yolo County.
Opening Doors is a Sacramento nonprofit that provides tools and resources for refugees and victims of human trafficking. Trafficking victims who have escaped or been released through law enforcement action are assisted in starting a new life in the Sacramento area. Refugees are assisted with resettlement here, as they acclimate to a new country, work environment and health and financial systems. Our church has already worked with Opening Doors to provide a welcome kit for a needy refugee family.

Pastor Transition News
Those in worship on March 13th heard the announcement that, beginning July 1st, the new pastor of the Davis United Methodist Church will be the Rev. Brandon Austin. Pastor Brandon is currently serving as pastor of the First United Methodist Church in Modesto. Originally from Tennessee, Brandon has served several churches in Northern California over the past 26 years. A long time supporter of an inclusive church and Reconciling Ministries, Brandon was one of the "Sacramento 68" - 68 pastors who co-officiated the Holy Union ceremony of a lesbian couple in 1999 as a challenge to the discrimination of official denominational policy.

From Your Finance Ministry
| FEBRUARY ACTUAL | YEAR-TO-DATE ACTUAL | | | | INCOME | $50,465.41 | $74,085.08 | | | | EXPENSE | $25,080.45 | $59,095.71 | | | | NET | $25,384.96 | $14,989.37 |
I would like to acknowledge the hard work of the Finance Committee and the Ministry Chairs in developing a balanced budget for the 2016 fiscal year. We were able to meet Ministry Program and most Staff Parish Relations Committee staffing requests this year with the help of being able to budget $50,363 in reserves from prior year carry forwards. The Finance Ministry will be wrestling with the challenges for the upcoming fiscal year in the next few months as we prepare for a more challenging budget process for 2017 absent a significant increase in pledges.
The Finance Report for the end of February reflects a significant excess of revenues over expenses. This can be explained by the fact that we operate on a cash basis. So if a pledge or donation that was budgeted for 12 months comes in one lump sum at the beginning of the year (as did happen) the revenue picture looks more optimistic than it might at the end of the year.
Thank you for your support of our church's vibrant and evolving ministries.

"An Act of Love" Showing in Sacramento
April 10th, 1:30pm
|
Described as "emotionally powerful and ultimately uplifting" by the SF Chronicle, First UMC of Sacramento is proud to screen Act of Love, a documentary about Reverend Frank Schaefer and the division in the United Methodist Church over LGBTQ inclusion. Act of Love tells the story of an unwitting advocate in the fight for equal rights within the Church.
The film screens at 1:30pm Sunday 4/10 and is free. Free lunch is available beforehand at noon; RSVP for lunch to 916-446-5025.
Within the United Methodist denomination is a fierce debate over LGBTQ inclusion, and this documentary provides a wonderful context for the current state of the discussion. This year, the United Methodist Church will meet again for their General Conference, where the rules about same-sex marriage and LGBTQ clergy will again be debated. First UMC invites you to learn more about this issue through the film's retelling of Reverend Schaefer's unique trials and tribulations followed by an open discussion of the issues.
