A "LOVE" NOTE...
(from your pastor)
heart

Dear DUMC friends,

"Over the frontier, in the wilderness, it can seem as if the world is falling to pieces. And yet the call keeps coming - a call to community with all those others who are wounded, whose worlds or lives also seem to be falling apart, yet who are actually - we  must believe - giving birth to something new."
        --Veronica Brady, Australian writer

And so we continue on in Lent. In the season of Lent, we take our cue from the scripture lesson that sets us off - the story of Jesus' forty days in the wilderness. And in this season, we are on a forty-day journey ourselves, through the wilderness out around us and the wilderness we find inside ourselves.

I suspect it's the wilderness inside ourselves that causes us the most consternation. The wilderness "out there" may be scary, may even be dangerous, but at least we can keep it at a distance. When the wilderness shows up inside us, it is harder to ignore, harder to keep at bay. In Lent we are invited to stop ignoring it, to stop keeping that wilderness at bay. We are invited to turn again toward God, and even to dare to turn toward the wilderness, even to explore it.

The wilderness is those corners of our lives where, as the quote above suggests, it feels like our world or even our lives are falling apart. It may be a wilderness of grief or sorrow, a wilderness of loneliness, a wilderness of insecurity or lack of direction.

Why would God call us into such places?  I am convinced that we are called into the wilderness for the promise of new life we find there. If we can only make the effort to open our dark and tangled places to view - even if only the view of our own honest gaze - then God's love and healing touch have been invited in. What we thought were broken pieces turn out to be puzzle pieces, just waiting to find their places so a whole picture might emerge. The wilderness journey can be a strenuous one - but it is always a journey headed toward Easter, and the promise of new life it brings.

See you in church!

In Faith,
Pastor Kelly signature

March 20th Special Offering:
One Great Hour of Sharing

Our special offering this month will be devoted to the United Methodist church-wide special collection for One Great Hour of Sharing.  The One Great Hour of Sharing offering supports the efforts of the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR).

As the humanitarian arm of the church, UMCOR responds to disasters, hunger and poverty in 81 countries around the world. This special offering goes to pay the administrative costs of UMCOR so that donations to special projects go 100% to relieve suffering with no additional administrative costs.  This effort calls on United Methodists to share the goodness of life with those who hurt.

Easter Season Preview: Adult Small-Group Opportunity

"Dappled Things: Exploring the season of Easter through the poetry of Gerard Manley Hopkins" will be a new small-group offering for adults for the Easter season. Beginning the week after Easter, the five-session series will explore Ignatian spirituality, finding God in nature, and the poetry of Gerard Manley Hopkins. Similar to the 2014 Advent small-groups, participants will be invited to explore the poetry and themes and also to try their hand at some writing of their own.

David will lead weekly sessions on Wednesday evenings beginning March 30th. We would like to offer one or two more sections to accommodate those who have Wednesday evening church meetings and/or those who prefer daytime activities. If you might be willing to facilitate an additional section (using a basic plan provided by David with freedom to add your own touch as you choose), please contact Pastor Kelly.

Watch your Thursday emails for more details as we get closer to the start date!

Pathway Process: What's Happening Now

You are invited to shape the ministries you love most!

What have been your best experiences at Davis UMC? What do you want more of?

The Church Council has approved a plan to deepen and strengthen the work of our church by capitalizing on those areas of activity the church is most energized by. These areas, according to the interview responses from our Pathway interviews of 116 church participants, are:
  • worship
  • service and justice
  • small groups
The current stage of our work calls for the creation of three working groups: one for each of these three work areas. The first task of each working group is to develop a bold vision for that work area in the life of our church.

YOU are invited be part of a one-time gathering to develop a bold vision for the area - or areas - you feel most passionate about. Feel free to sign up for more than one!

Signing up for this stage of the process means signing up for this visioning. After the development of bold visions, next steps will be to develop concrete plans out of these visions, and we hope people will join in the planning and implementation processes as well!

If you sign up for one or more working groups, we will work with you when scheduling the visioning sessions, and will make an extra effort to make sure you are in the loop on all communications about the upcoming visioning sessions. Visioning sessions will take place after Easter; each will be an approximately 3 hour meeting held on a weekend day. Sessions will  be open to all and advertised in the weekly e-newsletter.

You can sign up by calling Anna in the church office (756-2170) or using Sign Up Genius, here

If you'd like to brush up your understanding of the current work of the Pathway process, here are some resources you can check out:
