A "LOVE" NOTE... (from your pastor)
heart

Dear DUMC friends,

You are invited to shape the ministries you love most!

What have been your best experiences at Davis UMC? What do you want more of?

The Church Council has approved a plan initiated by the Pathway Guiding Team to deepen and strengthen the work of our church by capitalizing on those areas of activity the church is most energized by. These areas, according to the interview responses from our Pathway interviews of 116 church participants, are:
  • worship
  • service and justice
  • small groups
The current stage of our work calls for the creation of three working groups: one for each of these three work areas. The first task of each working group is to develop a bold vision for that work area in the life of our church.

YOU are invited be part of a one-time gathering to develop a bold vision for the area - or areas - you feel most passionate about. Feel free to sign up for more than one!

Signing up for this stage of the process means signing up for this visioning. After the development of bold visions, next steps will be to develop concrete plans out of these visions, and we hope people will join in the planning and implementation processes as well! But for now we are simply asking for involvement in this first step.

If you sign up for one or more working groups, we will work with you when scheduling the visioning sessions, and will make an extra effort to make sure you are in the loop on all communications about the upcoming visioning sessions. (Sessions will also be open to all and advertised in the weekly e-newsletter.)

You can sign up by calling Anna in the church office (756-2170) or using Sign Up Genius, here

If you'd like to brush up your understanding of the current work of the Pathway process, here are some resources you can check out:

See you in church!

In Faith,
Pastor Kelly signature

CELEBRATING LENT AT HOME: FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN (up through 5th grade)
An email will be going out to households with children this age. There will be a simple Ash Wednesday service that you can do at home at a time that fits your family. We hope to have ashes available to take home Feb. 7th.

It will also include a suggestion for marking the days with an opportunity to put aside coins for One Great Hour of Sharing. There will also be suggestions for marking the Sundays and for un-decorating your home. As with Advent, practices and rituals can be helpful tools connecting us with God and one another during this season. Some are new and some are ancient. Watch for the email.

God Talk At Home: A Six-Week Lenten Series
3:30 to 5:30 Sunday, February 14th and continuing through March 20th in the Walker Room

Do you have children or teens in your life that you want to be able to talk more comfortably with about God and matters of faith? This will be an opportunity to do some in-class reading and discussion of some of the challenges, tools, and pathways for God talk at home or in the car or while on a hike or whenever the moment is right. No matter your comfort level, Pastor Kelly will create a safe space for all to share and support one another as each one finds their way way forward. Child care will be provided.

Feb. 21st Special Offering:
Yolo Crisis Nursery and Citizens Who Care

Our special offering this month will support two local agencies that provide services to the most vulnerable in our community.  They are Yolo Crisis Nursery and Citizens Who Care.

Yolo Crisis Nursery provides a 24-hour free, safe environment where families can take young children ages 0-5 when a family is facing hardship and stress.  Families are also supported by being connected with community resources.  It costs over $400,000 per year to operate YCN, but much pain and suffering is averted and many more thousands of dollars in child protective service costs and legal fees are saved.

Citizens Who Care provides services to improve the quality of life for the elderly and their caregivers through an in-home respite program and a convalescent hospital visiting program. Now the organization has a CWC Saturday Club program at the Davis Senior Center.

As our social safety net shrinks with tightening budgets, our support of these agencies is more important than ever.

From Your Finance Ministry

Thank you to all who responded to the appeal from your pastor in December! We received some pledge increases and some special gifts to help avoid budget cuts - and we are very grateful to those of you who stepped up!

When planning for 2015, the Finance Ministry had anticipated a budget shortfall which would require us to dip into surplus funds from prior years; however, that did not happen. As a result, those surplus funds were still available, and the 2016 budget is a balanced budget with the expectation that we will need to draw on those funds in 2016 in order to balance the budget; the income we anticipate for 2016 is still lower than our anticipated expenses. While this is not ideal, it is good to have a balanced budget, good that we had funds available to make this happen, and great that we didn't have to cut salaries or other valuable ministry expenses for 2016!

A big thank you to the Finance Committee for working so hard and thoughtfully to develop a budget, along with the Church Council for thoughtfully considering and approving the budget.

And a big thank you to all of you who give so faithfully on an ongoing basis to support the valuable ministries of Davis UMC!
- Pastor Kelly

Grace Garden Monthly Update

Happy New Year! We're starting another growing season at Grace Garden and enjoying the rain.
The hoop house has been organized and Jim Tischer built new tables to hold all the plants. We will be starting seedlings in the hoop house soon, getting ready for the annual plant sale April 9, and for planting in the garden here.

Other projects are ongoing - pruning fruit trees, composting last year's leaves and plant debris, adding manure to the beds and checking our irrigation system before spring. If you have any time to help out, come to one of our work times. Mondays and Saturdays 9:00-11:00 a.m. and Thursdays 1:30-3:30 p.m.

We also invite you to attend free Master Gardener classes at Grace Garden.

IRWS Reflections
by Rita Lundin

Thank you all for your part in helping to offer a week of warm meals and shelter to our homeless guests. There are so many hands involved in this ministry, we had over 80 volunteers. It truly speaks to the spirit-filled, welcoming & affirming, justice & service-oriented church that we are. Read More

Book Study: "Waking up White"

Beginning January 31 and continuing on Feb 7Feb 14Mar 6Mar 13April 3, and April 10, Carol Holmes and Susie O'Bryant are leading a series of forums on the book, "Waking Up White and Finding Myself in the Story of Race" by Debby Irving.

"With honesty and humility, Debby Irving shares her own story of transformation - a journey of opening herself to learning about the realities of racism and the unintended impacts of white privilege.  By confronting her own fears and mistakes, she gleans many useful lessons and tips that can help move others from confusion and avoidance to constructive engagement, authentic connection, and courageous action."

Interfaith Meeting on Syrian Refugee Crisis

On Sunday February 7th at 7 pm folks wishing to collaborate on helping Syrians refugees (or those wanting to find out more about the issue) will meet in the Walker Room at Davis United Methodist Church (1620 Anderson Road, Davis).

At the meeting we will share what congregations have done on their own and discuss how we might work together to aid the Syrian refugees. In addition, Rev. Kristin Stoneking from the Fellowship of Reconciliation's will introduce the #GiveRefugeesRest advocacy campaign. The advocacy campaign has a simple request: send a pillowcase with the message #Give RefugeesRest.

At the end of the meeting, folks will decorate pillows as part of the FOR campaign, so please bring a pillowcase if you can. We can then send them to our Facebook, twitter and Instagram accounts to spread the word.

For more information contact Helen Roland (hroland2@gmail.com 530-756-3973).

Refugee "Welcome Kits"

The Church and Society Ministry understands this congregation's desire to do something to help the thousands of Middle Eastern people displaced by war and ISIS.  At present we are waiting for responses from other local churches regarding a large joint project to help resettle arriving refugee families.  In the meantime,  we are launching a smaller project within our church to create "Welcome Kits."
Refugees often flee their homes at a moment's notice, and arrive at our airport with only a few suitcases in hand. Welcome Kits provide families with the basic household items they need for their new start.

Beginning January 31, we will be collecting items for 4 different "Welcome Kits" - Kitchen, Bathroom, Household,  and Cleaning. We will have sign-up sheets after each service, and you can choose which items you would like to contribute.  The following Sun day, we will have plastic tubs labeled for each kit for you to put the items in.  If you prefer, you can donate money, which we will use to buy any remaining items on the lists.  The Welcome Kits will then be given to Opening Doors, one of three agencies approved to help resettle refugees in the Sacramento area.

Sacred Conversations for Racial Justice
Davis Community Church

An interfaith Group in Davis will host a series of sacred and respectful conversations surrounding the issues of race in our society today. The goal of these conversations is to help participants better understand the racial tensions facing us and provide insight into how we can respond in an informed way. Discussions are based on information provided on webcasts, so no outside reading is required. However, the facilitators will provide references for those who wish to delve deeper into topics.

The first session is Monday, February 8th. Subsequent meetings will be on Wednesday evenings (February 17th to March 16th). Each session will begin with snacks at 6:30 pm. The webcast will start at 7 pm. After the webcast we will break into small groups for facilitated discussion. Sessions will end at 8:30. For more information contact Helen Roland (hroland2@gmail.com  756-3973)
