This Sunday, October 11th
|
Worship at 8:30 and 11:00 am
This week's sermon will explore the core of who we are as a congregation. Davis UMC's Pathway process has revealed a very cohesive self-understanding in this congregation: we are spirit-filled, welcoming & affirming, justice & service-oriented. In the coming months, our congregation will be intentionally and explicitly embracing this DNA in all that we do - with this sermon serving as a bit of a "kick-off." Rev. Kelly Love is preaching; the s ermon is titled "Who We Are: Spirit-Filled, Welcoming, and Making a Difference in the World." The scripture is Micah 6:6-8.

Godly Play Leaders Gathering this Sunday at 9:45
All doorkeepers and storytellers are encouraged to gather this Sunday to address some of your practical questions such as how to handle offering, attendance, and the feast. There will be a 10 minute mini-training/review. We will also explore some great opportunities for training that are coming soon. One of those will be bringing Godly Play trainer Di Pagels to our church. Bring your calendar so we can schedule some dates! We will meet in the Grace Cafe.

3. Forum this Week: "Merchants of Doubt."
By now it is well known that the tobacco industry waged a long campaign of disinformation to cast doubt on the science linking cigarettes and cancer. Less well known is how many other industries have done the same. Currently the petroleum industry is waging a campaign of disinformation regarding climate change, using some of the same people and strategies borrowed from the tobacco industry. The DVD "Merchants of Doubt" documents the history of such campaigns. We'll watch segments and engage in discussion.

4. All-Church Baby Shower for Seth Wise, Jan. 17th
An All-Church Baby Shower will be held on Sunday, January 17th, in Fellowship Hall after the 11:00 service. We are welcoming baby Seth Keaton Wise, born to Kristine and Matthew Wise (and siblings Evan and Haylee) on November 16th, 2015.
As always we will be presenting them with individual wishes for Seth, as well as simple gifts. Since the family has been generously blessed with gifts from family and friends, Kristine has requested that gifts be directed either to Yolo Crisis Nursery or Kylie Lilich Foundation in Woodland, which provides layettes to new moms who have nothing and are in dire need.
Everyone is invited and encouraged to participate in this important ministry. If possible, please bring finger food to share.

5. African Team Ministries Sale, January 24th and 31st
Valentines, Mother's Day, Graduations, Birthdays are just around the corner! Come shop for some unique and wonderful crafts from Africa, mainly Kenya. The United Methodist Church is part of an ecumenical group that buys the crafts from local artists to support them and ships the items over to the US, where they are circulated to local churches. We will be selling items after each service. Please stop by and take a look. Bring your checkbook too!

6. Exploring Membership Class, January 30th
Are you new to Davis UMC? Or maybe you've been attending forever and just have never officially joined? Pastor Kelly will be offering a gathering for "exploring membership" on Saturday, January 30th, from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm.
All are welcome! There is no obligation to become a member at the end of the time - just an open invitation to explore and enjoy. This is a chance for participants to get to know one another and share the life journeys that have brought you to this church. In this time we will: learn about Davis United Methodist Church; learn some core beliefs and principles of the Christian faith and United Methodism; and learn what the commitment of membership means in the United Methodist Church. Lunch will be provided! We can provide child care, too - just let us know you need it! RSVP so we know how much food to prepare. Call the church office (756-2170) or email ( pastorkelly@davisumc.org).

7. Celebration of Abraham 2016: "Faith Not Fear"
All three of the main Abrahamic traditions believe that trust in God and a right understanding of our faiths will strengthen us to overcome the fear of those who threaten us with violence. A climate of fear leads to actions that escalate violence in the world. With leaders calling for excluding refugees from the violence of the wars in the Middle East and Central America, we as people of faith in the richest country on earth must consider how our faith traditions call us to respond. How do we help de-escalate the fear and violence and respond to our brothers and sisters in need? These are the questions we will investigate at this year's Celebration of Abraham on January 31st at Saint James Catholic Church. Save the date and watch for more information on this year's event.

1. Attention SaveMart Shoppers
If you shop at SaveMart and are part of their preferred customer system you have been earning points that can be used to "purchase" knives. You can see how many points you have earned by looking at the bottom of your receipt. If you are not using the points to add to your knife collection, can you use them to help us replace some of our older knives in the Church kitchen? Just turn your points in for the largest knife you can get (without spending any money) and put it in the knife drawer in the kitchen. The deadline for redeeming points is January 19th.

Chalking the Door Letter Meaning
Some of you asked the meaning of the letters CMB for when we "chalk the door" to our homes (the focus of last Sunday's children's moment). There are two meanings of this long standing tradition. One is the initials of the traditional names given for the wise ones: Caspar, Melchior and Balthazar.
The second meaning comes from the Latin phrase "Christus mansionem benedicat", "May Christ bless the house." While it can be written 20 CMB 16, it can also be written 20 + C + M + B + 16 with the "+" signs representing the cross. Epiphany has a lot to offer us at all ages and stages on our journey of faith. So we'll visit this again next year!
