A "LOVE" NOTE... (from your pastor)
| |
Dear DUMC friends,
I've been reading a lot of poetry in recent weeks, in anticipation of the "Lessons and Carols and Poems" service that rounded out our Christmas celebration (and thanks to Briagha Stevens, who helped me find innumerable good poems that I would not have found on my own!).
I am only an on-again, off-again poetry reader. But when I find a poem I love, it can be transformative. For me, there is nothing quite like the magic of words that somehow evoke great emotion and carry subtle, overlapping layers of meaning.
Sometimes I think that much Christian scripture is best read as poetry. Sometimes I think that taking the Christian story as inspiration, evocative of emotion, with overlapping layers of symbolic meaning, can be particularly powerful in capturing our imaginations and compelling our attention (and even intentions).
One of my dearest hopes for faith, and church, and worship, is that it is compelling to us: grabbing our imaginations, inspiring us, and shaping our intentions. If poetry can help with this - perhaps we need more of it!
See you in church!
In Faith,
p.s. I am starting the month with a week of vacation - from December 28 through January 3rd.

Exploring Membership
Are you new to Davis UMC? Or maybe you've been attending forever and just have never officially joined? Pastor Kelly will be offering a gathering for "exploring membership" on Saturday, January 30th, from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm.
All are welcome! There is no obligation to become a member at the end of the time - just an open invitation to explore and enjoy. This is a chance for participants to get to know one another and share the life journeys that have brought you to this church. In this time we will: learn about Davis United Methodist Church; learn some core beliefs and principles of the Christian faith and United Methodism; and learn what the commitment of membership means in the United Methodist Church.
Lunch will be provided! We can provide child care, too - just let us know you need it! Please RSVP so we know how much food to prepare. Call the church office (756-2170) or email ( pastorkelly@davisumc.org).

Historical Notes
By Kathy Schinski
A new year calls for reflection on the past and looking with hope on the time ahead. In January of 1874, the friends of Frances R. Havergal who wrote "Take My Life And Let It Be," (which I have previously discussed) received a New Year's greeting with the text of what became the hymn "Another Year Is Dawning." Francis was very devoted to serving God and it was said that she always lived her words before she wrote them. Read More

Celebration of Abraham:
"Faith Not Fear"
All three of the main Abrahamic traditions believe that trust in God and a right understanding of our faiths will strengthen us to overcome the fear of those who threaten us with violence. A climate of fear leads to actions that escalates violence in the world. With leaders calling for excluding refugees from the violence of the wars in the Middle East and Central America, we as people of faith in the richest country on earth must consider how our faith traditions call us to respond. How do we help de-escalate the fear and violence and respond to our brothers and sisters in need? These are the questions we will investigate at this year's Celebration of Abraham on January 31st at Saint James Catholic Church. Save the date and watch for more information on this year's event.

All-Church Baby Shower for Seth Wise
An All Church Baby Shower will be held on Sunday, January 17th, in Fellowship Hall after the 11:00 service. We are welcoming baby Seth Keaton Wise, born to Kristine and Matthew Wise (and siblings Evan and Haylee), on November 16th, 2015.
As always we will be presenting them with individual wishes for Seth, as well as simple gifts. Since the family has been generously blessed with gifts from family and friends, Kristine has requested that gifts be directed either to Yolo Crisis Nursery or Kylie Lilich Foundation in Woodland, which provides layettes to new moms who have nothing and are in dire need.
Everyone is invited and encouraged to participate in this important ministry. If possible, please bring finger food to share.

Request for Playground Equipment
The Children and Youth Committee is looking to replace some of the plastic outdoor play equipment we have for the younger children in the church. If anyone has some in good condition that they are looking to get rid of, please contact Brian Williams either by email at brian@andcheese.org or by phone/text at 530-574-5153. If you can send a picture of what you are considering donating, it would be very helpful. Our slides and child-sized picnic table are in particular need of replacing. Thank you for considering this.
