This Sunday, December 13th
Worship at 8:30 and 11:00 am
Preaching: Rev. Kelly Love
Sermon: "For Everyone Born: A System That's Fair"
Scripture: Luke 3:7-18
In Luke's gospel, people ask John the Baptist how to prepare for whatever is to come. John's answer? An overhaul of the system. Everyone must share; tax collectors stop being corrupt; soldiers stop cheating and harassing people. For any of us who experience some privilege in current systems, this also suggests that we might need to examine that - even be willing to yield some of that. Our hymn suggests that for everyone born, there should be a system that's fair.

4. Dec. 13th Contemporary Issues Forum

Topic: The Syrian Refugee Crisis: A report from Croatia with Julia Newcomb, Michael Rooke-Ley, and Rev. Kristin Stoneking

The Syrian war and the instability in the Middle East have created the largest refugee migration since the end of World War II.  Julia and Michael have just returned from several weeks in Croatia, including one day at the refugee transfer point on the Slovenian border, and will share their observations.  Sacramento is one of the main resettlement areas for Syrian refugees in California.  What can we do to help in this humanitarian crisis?  Come join this discussion.

The Rev. Kristin Stoneking will also talk about the Fellowship of Reconciliation's work to assist Syrian refugees.

5. Interfaith Rotating Winter Shelter Begins THIS SUNDAY

Thank you for the many ways you support this ministry. Please check the signup sheet in the Fellowship Hall to see how you can help. We need a few more morning drivers and overnighters.

DONATION BOX IN THE SANCTUARY NARTHEX
Items needed:
  • New or gently used winter clothing, jackets, sweatshirts, gloves, hats, etc.
  • New white tube socks
  • Small toiletries (toothpaste, tooth brush, deodorant)
***Also, we can use volunteers around 12:15 on Sunday 12/13 to help unload the U-Haul truck. This truck has all the supplies needed for our week of shelter (cots, sleeping bags, etc.).

Thank you!

6. Help needed: Blue Christmas Service, Dec. 20th, 7:00pm

The "Blue Christmas" service seeks to particularly offer a comforting space to those who find themselves feeling down this time of year. Can you help? We need folks to:
  • Bring refreshments for the reception/fellowship after the service. When the stresses of the holidays include an overabundance of sugar and caffeine, we strive to offer some healthier options. Fruit, nuts, herbal teas, etc. are especially welcome.
  • Set-up/moving furniture. We will rearrange our worship space slightly and arrange the Narthex (lobby) so people can stay for fellowship without leaving the building. Please come at 6:00 on 12/20 for set-up.
"Blue Christmas" is a simple, quiet service for those who are feeling less than merry as Christmas approaches. The "Blue Christmas" service offers a message of comfort to help us through times of struggle during the holidays. It acknowledges the pain and sadness many people feel at Christmas time due to the loss of a loved one, struggles with illness, loneliness, or finances; or the dread of painful family dynamics that surface at Christmas time.

Announcements
1. Church Finances - 2016 Budget

If you haven't already read the December 6th appeal letter from Pastor Kelly with information about the church's current financial position, please do. You can find it here.

If you are planning to make a pledge for 2016, or increase your pledge, you can download a pledge form here or find one in the brochure rack in the Narthex (lobby to the sanctuary).

For those of you wishing to make one-time special gifts to help us avoid budget cuts, you can turn in a check or cash to the church office, or mail it, or place it in the offering plate. Please include a note so we know this is a special gift and not part of your 2015 pledge. (See article below if you want to make sure gifts count for your 2015 taxes.)

Thank you so much for your support of DUMC!
2. Staff Christmas Gifts

An Advent tradition at DUMC is to show our appreciation for staff by presenting them with a cash gift.  This  "thank-you" is sweetened by the fact that each person chips in to create the gift making it truly from our Church Community.

Please show our staff how much you appreciate their hard work by contributing whatever you can toward a holiday gift that is given to each staff member. On December 13th please place your contribution in the white envelope in the bulletin or pew and write "Staff Holiday Gift" on the outside. If you prefer, you can place your contribution in the SPRC mailbox prior to December 13th, or mail your donation to the church office so that it arrives on or before December 11th.

Thank you for your kindness and generosity.

Kim Coontz-Myers
Chair, Staff-Parish Relations Committee

3. Help Feed the Hungry (Students)

CA House is looking for a few people to support our Monday night Christian worship ministry by helping with food.  We offer a students a hybrid worship/bible study every Monday night when school is in session, and the event concludes with breaking bread together.  We are looking to provide a mix of vegan and regular main course options each week, along with a side vegetable dish or salad.  We are hoping to get support from our partner churches each once a month, and are asking for help from DUMC on the third Monday of each month.  If you would be willing to help by providing a single dish or a whole meal every month or two, please contact Jake Whittaker (jake@cahouse.org or 753-2000).
4.
Year-End Giving Deadline

In order to comply with IRS guidelines regarding year-end giving, all donations must either be received in person by December 31st or postmarked by December 31st if mailed.

For mail-in donations received on or after December 31st, the envelopes will be retained in order to confirm that the donations were postmarked by December 31st.  Financial Secretaries will verify the postmark dates and will retain the envelopes with the Income Statement files in the church office.  If you are working with a banking or other financial institution to make your donation, you must ensure that the institution can provide the December 31st postmark.

For drop-in donations, staff will be available on Thursday, Dec 31st until 12:00 pm to accept your walk-in donations for 2015.
