1. Contemporary Issues Forum This Sunday: To Kill or To Cure
Marilu Carter will show excerpts from this 2003 two-part documentary by Canadian filmmakers Josh Freed and Jon Kalina. The film shows the harsh treatment and torture in prisons in some countries, such as China, Saudi Arabia, and the US (Pelican Bay, CA) and illustrates the more gentle treatment in Japan, Finland, and Canada. What kinds of emotional, psychological, and physical conditions equip prisoners to exit prison and reenter society? What kinds of education, skills, and rational thinking capacity best serve those reentering society?

4. Will You Help Bring "Food to Every Fork" in Yolo County?
Help us spread the word about the county-wide crowd funding campaign being launched to buy a refrigerated truck for the Yolo County Food Bank. We have the food - we just need to be able to get it to those in need.
How Can You Help?
Attend a one-hour training that will provide you all you need to know to bring the importance of this campaign to your community and show how easy it is to give.
Where and When:
- Tuesday, September 15th, Congregation Bet Haverim, South Classroom at 6:00 pm
- Thursday, September 24th, Yolo County Food Bank Conference Room at 7:00 pm
- Monday, September 28th, West Sacramento Teen Center at 7:00 pm
Why?
Because a little bit of effort will ensure that our neighbors have fresh, nutritious food to eat.
If you have a laptop, smart phone or tablet, please bring it with you so we can walk you through each step of the process. It is not necessary to have any of these to participate.
Please come whether or not you RSVP.

Youth Leadership Davis Information Sessions,

Information sessions for students interested in applying for Youth Leadership Davis (YLD) will be held Sunday, September 20th at noon and 5 pm at Davis Community Church, 412 C Street. Applications for YLD are due September 27th.
YLD is a year-long program that equips high school students to be community leaders through hands-on experience, skill building and education while confronting vexing and controversial community life and health issues of our day. Training and education includes compassionate listening, non-violent communication, and mental health issues.
As trained interns at Davis' Interfaith Rotating Winter Shelter, the high school students learn about the root causes of homelessness. They received intensive shelter training and certification in mental health first aid. Moral, ethical and spiritual reflection is a component of the program. YLD is a non-denominational, non-sectarian program open to all high school students grades 10-12. For more information:

6. Wednesday Bible Study: Gospel of Mark, Beginning Sept. 23rd
"You are sound asleep and dreaming, when suddenly the door bursts open and a bright light shines full in your face. A voice, breaking in on your dream-world, shouts, 'Wake up! Get up! You'll be late!' And without more ado, the speaker splashes your face with cold water to make the point. Time to stop dreaming and face the most important day of your life. That's what the opening of Mark's Gospel is like..."
Wednesday Bible will begin a study of the Gospel of Mark on September 23, 1:30-3 pm. We will use minister and Biblical scholar N.T. Wright's study guide, which comes packed with thought-provoking discussion questions. A lively time is expected!
Please join in this adventure on Wednesday afternoons if you are able. Books are $9. No preparation required for each session.

Monthly Small Group Senior Luncheons
Atria/Covell Gardens has offered to provide a monthly luncheon for small groups (10 to 12 people) of DUMC seniors. The lunch, provided in a pleasant private dining room, offers an opportunity for relaxing conversation and friendship. The DUMC Congregational Care Ministry is looking for a volunteer to help coordinate the monthly luncheon, which would involve contacting/confirming a group of interested seniors and working with the transportation ministry to ensure that any necessary rides are set up. The first luncheon, held in July, was quite successful, with Atria providing the space, the food, and all service and DUMC providing the fellowship. Please contact Anna Wisehart in the church office if you are interested in helping to coordinate this wonderful fellowship.
