Announcements

1. From Your Church and Society Committee:
To conserve water and fight climate change, let's go vegetarian once each week on Mondays!  The Cool Davis Interfaith Alliance for Climate Justice encourages faith communities to care for God's creation by foregoing meat on Mondays.

Why? It takes about 1800 gallons of water to produce one pound of beef.  This includes water for growing feed, rearing the cow, butchering, transporting, storing, etc.  One pound of chicken takes 500 gallons, while potatoes, pasta, fruit, and vegetables all take less than 100 gallons.  In addition, most of the feed for meat animals is grown using petrochemicals, fertilizers and pesticides that deplete the soil. Moreover, cows, pigs, and chickens also are major source of methane, one of the worst greenhouse gases.  So let's conserve by going meatless at least once a week.
2. Contemporary Issues Forum Coordinator Needed

The Contemporary Issues Forum meets each week between services (from 9:45 to 10:45).  The current coordinator, Susan Padgett, will be stepping down and we are looking for someone who would be interested in taking her place.

The format of the forum is flexible.  It can include speakers, films, conversations, book studies, etc.  Forum is part of the Church and Society ministry of DUMC.  If you are interested in coordinating or interested in facilitating a conversation on a particular topic, please contact Susan at sdpadgett@sbcglobal.net or Paul Grench at PaulGrench@aol.com.

3. Pastor Kelly out of town August 13th-17th

Pastor Kelly is taking a quick weekend trip from Thursday through Monday.

Rev. Clay Ballard is available for urgent/emergency pastoral care backup. Clay's contact information is in the church directory. General inquiries can be directed to Office Manager Anna Wisehart during office hours, Tuesdays through Fridays, 9:30am - 2:30pm.

4. UMW will not be meeting in August

We will return to our regular meeting schedule in September with a program reporting on the books in the UMW reading program.

5. Davis Community Meals is in need of some help!

At this time DCM is in need of volunteers in our Resource Center. The hours are part-time and flexible: Monday - Friday, between 8am - 4pm. We ask for 2 hours once a week! All that is asked is that you keep to the same schedule each week.

Secondly, volunteers are needed to work in the DCM transitional housing program from 6 pm-9 pm or 6 pm-11 pm. This is a clean and sober living environment. Training is provided.

DCM is also looking for people who can serve as back-ups for weekend morning shifts: Saturday or Sunday morning from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm at the shelter. The shelter is closed to the public on weekend mornings and volunteers usually find time to do some studying or reading in addition to socializing with clients.

On occasion, trained volunteers are needed to cover evening shifts at the last minute if a volunteer is ill or has an emergency.

Davis Community Meals prefers that volunteers have experience working with homeless or low-income families or individuals, but a compassionate attitude is
more important. To ask questions or express interest contact Harmony Scopazzi - the Davis Community Meals Volunteer Coordinator - at volunteersatdcm@sbcglobal.net or 530-220-4089.
