Policy Change: Unattended Children  The Rapid City Public Libraries' Board and staff hope that children and parents find the libraries inviting and enjoyable and will visit often.
Effective October 1, 2013, children 8 and under must be under the direct supervision of a responsible party age 16 or older.
At RCPL North, the policy is in effect on weekends and after 5:30 p.m. on weekdays. This policy was adopted in the interest of children's safety as well as for the benefit of other library patrons.

Black Hills duo Jami Lynn & Dylan James combine Jami's vocals and finger picking with Dylan's flat-picking skills, old-time fiddling and tenor voice to bring you their unique mix of traditional American folk songs, bluegrass and jazz.

Classical Guitarist Peter Fletcher

Peter Fletcher began his guitar studies at age 9. He has studied at the University of Georgia and the Eastman School of Music. Rapid City is one stop on a nationwide tour to promote his new Edvard Grieg CD in which he wrote the guitar transcriptions. He will perform works from this CD as well as works from other composers.

Mike has been playing mandolin for almost 30 years with various groups. Mike and Michaelia have been playing music together since the summer of 2012. They play everything from traditional Celtic to Coldplay and quite a bit in between at venues all around the surrounding area.

A member of the Rapid City Genealogical Research, June Beason will walk attendees through the process of using the ancestry.com resource available on our website. Here you can access US Census records, birth, marriage and death records, helpful forms and more. If you are just beginning to investigate your family roots or would like to get some excellent tips, this Lunch & learn program may be just what you've been looking for.

"Hocus Pocus"

Join us for a big-screen movie night complete with refreshments! See this 1993 Halloween favorite in which three outlandishly wild witches return from 17th -century Salem after they're accidentally conjured up by some unsuspecting kids!
This program takes place the 2nd Monday of each month from September through May at 6:00 p.m. at our downtown location in meeting room B upstairs. The line-up for the second half of the season is a surprise!

 Yo-Yo Workshop

West Middle School students Michael Butterfield and Martin Christofferson will present this Discovery Day program doing an amazing display of yo-yo tricks. They are excited about sharing their skills with other young people. Bring your own yo-yo if you have one so you can try out some new moves with Michael and Martin.

Paws to Read @ the Library
Reading with Rhett the Pet Partners Dog
Saturday, October 5
1 - 3 p.m. at RCPL Downtown
Would your child like to read with a handsome standard poodle named Rhett? 6 Children will have the opportunity to read with this R.E.A.D (Reading Education Assistance Dog) Certified dog and his handler, Madonna Goodart.
Rhett has been trained and tested for health, safety, skills and temperament. His mission is to help children improve their reading skills in a fun and relaxing therapeutic setting. The only requirement is that the child must be able to read.
Parents can register their child on the library website from the Event Calendar. Rhett will join us again on November 2 and December 7.

Seek the Unknown @ Your Library
Read a Book, Get a Book During Teen Read Week, October 13-19, read a book, write a paragraph or two reviewing it, and turn it in at the Youth Services desk at the Downtown Library to get a young adult book in exchange! We will share your review on the library's teen blog. Teen librarian Lisa has been collecting some great books for prizes, so expand your own library and celebrate Teen Read Week with the Rapid City Public Libraries.
Teen Halloween Party!

Join us upstairs after the library closes for the day. We will feature spooky games, snacks and more candy than you can eat. Compete against other teens (ages 12-17) in a Halloween costume contest for your chance to win prizes provided by the Friends of the Library.
