Another New Year is Upon Us!

I must admit, I'm struggling to believe that 2016 is actually here. It feels like only yesterday I was celebrating Gasparilla 2015, getting ready for Rays' Spring Training and taking pictures of my son, Corey, starting his first day in 7th grade.
My point is that time flies and if we aren't careful, time can quickly get away from us. Yet, that's the great thing about starting a new year. Witnessing Abuse: Amber's Story
Amber is only 5 years old, but she's already suffered a lifetime of pain and trauma. Her mother was using drugs and in an on-again, off-again relationship with a man who was also drug addicted and had a hair-trigger temper. Michelle was appointed her guardian and after just a few weeks Amber was starting to feel more secure. However, Michelle noticed that she was still having problems adjusting and feeling safe. Amber would often mention the abuse she witnessed and she had nightmares almost every night. Michelle knew that Amber needed additional support, so she reached out to Corbett Trauma Center for trauma counseling. READ MORE

Care Coordination and Suicide Prevention
| Crisis Center Care Coordinators |
Each week, crisis specialists in the 2-1-1 contact center answer more than 50 calls from people who are contemplating taking their own lives. The specialist listens carefully to the caller and asks probing questions to determine the best way to help. Specialists use their training to de-escalate agitated callers and to develop a basic safety plan to avoid a future emotional crisis. There is often a long and complicated set of circumstances that bring a person to the point where they are having suicidal thoughts. Preventing a suicide in the moment is the highest priority but the Crisis Center recognizes the need to find long-term solutions as well. This is the reason for the Care Coordination program at the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay. READ MORE
