Crisis Doesn't Take a Holiday
By Clara Reynolds, President & CEO
I have to admit, I love holiday music!!! I have many favorites, but one of them is Andy William's classic "It's The Most Wonderful Time of the Year". This song paints an ideal picture of the season with images of people singing carols and roasting chestnuts over a cozy fire. While we all know that these idealistic holiday experiences portrayed in songs, television specials, and Norman Rockwell paintings aren't our reality, most of us still have fun decorating our homes, attending parties, sending holiday cards, and exchanging gifts. I like to think that the holidays are a temporary respite from the stress and concerns we experience throughout the year.
All of us know that people face trials and troubles regardless of the season and even during the "happiest season of all", there are people in our community who face some of the worst times of their lives. Wouldn't it be incredible if we could push a magic button and pause crisis and trauma for everyone during the few weeks between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day? Sadly, we all know this just isn't the case. I think this is part of the reason we try to be kinder, smile a little brighter, and act more charitable during the holidays. We want people who are struggling to know that they are not alone this time of year and to be reminded that they matter to us.
During my five months here, there's a phrase Crisis Center staff and volunteers say to each other that really sums up our mission for me - "I've got your back!" It's a way we let each other know we care and understand that all of us have unique struggles and challenges and that we're ready to help when needed. The Crisis Center is here to say "I've got your back!" to people in our community who are facing crisis and trauma. Through 2-1-1, Sexual Assault Services, TransCare and many additional programs, we are here 365 days a year, 24 hours a day so no one has to face a crisis alone - even during "the most wonderful time of the year."
By supporting the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay with your time, talent, and treasure, you're making a statement to people who are struggling this holiday season. You're saying "I care and I've got your back!" Thanks for everything you do to help us provide help, hope, and healing to our community members regardless of the season.
Wishing you and yours the happiest of holidays!
Clara
