Breaking the Silence at Robinson High

The Ray Rice video and other recent news stories have shed light on domestic violence. When a group of Robinson High School students learned that every 9 minutes, someone in the U.S. becomes a victim of domestic violence, they made a commitment to raise awareness about domestic violence.

The students worked with teachers and coaches to create a special event, "Breaking the Silence", that shined a light on the "every 9 minutes" statistic. At a recent Friday night boys' basketball game, Robinson students, teachers, and parents wore purple shirts to support survivors of domestic violence and kept silent until the 9th point. When the 9th point was scored, they broke the silence with cheers and applause. To watch a video of this moment, click HERE.

Representatives from the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay and the Sexual Violence Task Force were on hand to answer questions and distribute information to students. Crisis Center Board Chair, Gary Weismen, spoke to the student body before the game about domestic violence and help that is available by calling 2-1-1.

The Crisis Center of Tampa Bay is in the community each week providing information and resources pertaining to domestic violence, sexual assault, suicide prevention, and many other topics.
