A New Home for the Holidays: Karen's Story

Karen's decision was difficult, but she had to keep her children safe. After years of abuse, she filed a police report and had her abusive husband removed from the apartment where they lived with their 3 young children.

It was the right thing to do, but suddenly she was a single mom with only one income and many unforeseen expenses. She could afford her monthly bills, but not the deposits and fees required to change everything to her name. With these unexpected expenses, she realized she didn't have enough money for the rent. She was in a financial crisis that wasn't her fault.

Karen turned to the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay for help. While there was help available, a county inspection of the apartment revealed that her landlord had not maintained the property and there were numerous, severe, safety and health issues.

It was determined that it would be in Karen's best interest to find a different place to live. She was able to find an affordable and safe apartment. Karen's Crisis Center Case Manager, Cristina, helped her find solutions to her financial crisis. Karen's father and the Crisis Center worked together to pay her security deposits and 1st month's rent. She and the kids moved into the new apartment in early November.

Karen and her children are safe now and have a fresh start in a new home this holiday season because of people like you. Your support of the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay with a year-end donation, Sustainer Society membership, or Circle of Caring membership helps ensure that people like Karen don't need to face crisis alone.
