Donor Profile: Derek Harvey
Derek Harvey recently went through a "transition". After a 27 year career in the US Army where he achieved the rank of Colonel and worked as an intelligence officer, Derek made the transition back to civilian life. In the Fall of 2013 he started working as Co-Director of the Global Initiative for Civil Society and Conflict on the Tampa campus of USF.
Derek has lived in the Tampa Bay area for a number of years, but recently decided to get more involved in the community. Derek wanted to make the region his true home by offering support to organizations that make an important impact. At USF he started to hear about the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay.
"There were numerous people who mentioned the Crisis Center was doing very good work related to important issues like sexual assault and suicide".
He attended a business event where he met the Crisis Center's Director of Advancement, Jennifer Moore. She told him about the organization and invited him to take a tour of the facility. His positive experience on the tour confirmed what he had already heard about the Crisis Center and Derek soon became a member of the Crisis Center's
Sustainer Society. He explains why he decided to become a supporter:
"The services at the Crisis Center target people in need. It all makes sense and it works. Programs like the 2-1-1 call center, sexual assault services, & trauma counseling services have welcoming and caring people who help those at the worst time of their lives"
Derek not only provides financial support through his membership in the Sustainer Society, but in February he also served as a table captain at the Cup of Compassion breakfast. If you're interested in learning how you can get involved with the Crisis Center, you can do what Derek did and attend a lunchtime tour. To learn more about Crisis Center tours, click
