Isabel: Bravery in the Face of Betrayal
Isabel was only 8 years old when her family's long-time friend "Uncle" Javier moved into their home. He was no stranger to the family or to young Isabel. The family knew and trusted him, and had no concerns having him under their roof.
It wasn't long before things changed. One evening, when Javier was alone with Isabel, he touched the young girl in inappropriate places and ways. The first time it happened, Isabel thought it wasn't right. She didn't say anything because she was unsure of what was appropriate. She thought she could trust him because he was basically a member of the family.
When it happened again, she knew she had to say something. She was scared but she went to her parents, Luis and Camila, and told them what Javier had done. Her parents immediately had Javier removed from the family home and pressed charges against him.
In the weeks that followed, Isabel could not focus on things in school. She experienced intense fear, depression, and disturbed sleep. That's when Isabel and her family were referred to the Corbett Trauma Center.
Isabel's therapist helped her understand personal boundaries, relaxation techniques, and safety skills. She also helped Isabel understand how and why her feelings and thoughts would affect her behavior. As part of her final session Isabel made a t-shirt that read:
"Speak Up. Be Brave. Abuse is NOT our fault."
Isabel is now stronger than ever and she isn't letting what happened hinder any part of her life. She says, "I realize I can't hold onto my anger. That's just giving into that man, and allowing what happened to take my power." She told her therapist that "It was not a sad experience that it happened. A lot of good things came out of it."
