September 2014

Discovering Resilience & Empowerment
at World Suicide Prevention Day

At 8:00pm on September 10th, the lights dimmed at Carrollwood Cultural Center. Candles were lit and people paused to remember those lost, while quietly celebrating the resilience of friends and family members coping with the suicide of a loved one.

Efforts to prevent suicide have been celebrated on World Suicide Prevention Day - September 10th - each year since 2003. Over sixty people attended the 2014 Tampa Bay event that was organized by the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay and Tampa Bay Suicide Prevention Task Force, and was sponsored by the Suncoast Yellow Ribbon Project.

People at the event had the opportunity to receive an assortment of valuable information and coping techniques through a resource fair, guided visualization, yoga-inspired breathing exercises, and artistic activities.

If you're interested in learning more about suicide prevention, you're invited to attend one of the QPR Workshops at the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay through the year.  QPR stands for Question, Persuade, and Refer -- 3 simple steps anyone can learn to help save a life from suicide. QPR workshops are posted through the year in the EVENTS section of the Crisis Center's website.
