Corbett Trauma Center: Where Hope Begins
The people who walk through the doors of the Corbett Trauma Center seeking help have lived through some of the darkest and most disturbing experiences anyone could possibly go through: a child sexually abused by her father, a 19-year-old college student raped at a party, a middle-aged woman who's lost her husband to suicide.
What makes Corbett Trauma Center unique and especially effective is the specific focus on trauma. Trauma can affect anyone at any time for a variety of reasons. The consequences of trauma may or may not be evident: noticeable change in mood or behavior, irritability, sleeping difficulty, isolation, sadness, or recurrent or unrelenting anxiety. Many times self-destructive behavior including drug and alcohol abuse can be rooted in the trauma the individual experienced at some point in their lives.
Each person who comes to Corbett Trauma Center for help receives an age-specific "trauma symptoms assessment" that evaluates the symptoms reported by the client. The assessment can also help identify underlying symptoms the client may not be aware of. The counselors at Corbett Trauma Center approach therapy from a "Trauma Informed Care" perspective. Trauma Informed Care is a framework that includes acknowledgement of the prevalence and impact of violence and trauma on development and behavior. It implies that staff sensitively engage people with histories of trauma, recognize the role that trauma has played in their lives, and address potential physical and emotional symptoms. Trauma Informed Care seeks to change the paradigm from one that asks, "What's wrong with you?" to one that asks, "What has happened to you?" with principles that include safety, choice, collaboration, inclusiveness, trustworthiness, transparency, and empowerment.
Many people who come to Corbett Trauma Center for help are able to have their counseling sessions covered by insurance, Medicaid, or personal payments, but some cannot afford their deductible or have no insurance. There is currently a waiting list of people who need to have their therapy covered by grants or the support of donors. Your financial support of the Crisis Center can help reduce and even eliminate the list of adults and children waiting to receive trauma therapy. To make a donation today, please click HERE.
