Transforming Victims into Survivors

Years ago, rape victims in Hillsborough County had a very different experience after their assault than they do today.  They would be escorted by police through a crowded emergency room where they often waited for hours. Their wrist band said "Sexual Assault Exam".  When they were finally seen, the forensic exam was often interrupted by a "real emergency", after which the exam would have to be restarted.

The Crisis Center of Tampa Bay changed all that. Today, a rape victim is brought to the Crisis Center where they immediately begin the transformation from victim to survivor. They enter through a safe, private entrance at the Crisis Center and are greeted by a specially-trained nurse and a kind and understanding Sexual Assault Advocate. Their first stop is a comfortable, quiet room where they learn the options that are available to them.

The Crisis Center's goal is to empower the survivor. From the moment they walk through the door, they're in control and have authority to determine what happens next.  An Advocate helps them navigate the legal system - if they choose to report to police - and connects them to all of the Crisis Center resources, including counseling, victim's compensation and relocation assistance.

The survivor can also opt to participate in empowerment programs. These programs help them in their journey of healing by connecting them with other survivors. Members of the Empowerment Group plan events, engage in workshops, and help each other through the difficult and life changing recovery process.
