Joyce Turns to Corbett Trauma Center to Find Healing

For most of her life Joyce felt there must be something wrong with her - she was "unlovable and lacking as a human being". Why else would others hurt her over and over?  She had experienced horrific abuse as a child and was neglected by her mother. She had struggled with substance abuse over the years and was currently having thoughts of suicide.

When she came to the Corbett Trauma Center, Joyce was diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Over the course of treatment Joyce was able to discuss and process the many traumas she had experienced as a child. She received different  treatment modalities including Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TFCBT), Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART), and hypnosis. Each played a role in helping her see that the only place the abuse was still hurtful and thriving was in her mind. The abuse was not happening today and she "is" a person with worth.

Today Joyce is enrolled in school and is getting A's.  She has left behind the hurtful people of her past and present.  Her memories go to where they belong - they are part of her history, no more, no less.  She knows that treatment is a process. At times the ugliness of her abuse might try to return, but she has the strength to stand up to it.  She understands that she is not alone and that she has an army who stands behind her and cheers her on.

Joyce is just one of thousands of people the Crisis Center helped last year. If you're interested in learning more about the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay, Corbett Trauma Center, & TransCare, we'd like to invite you to join us on a tour. Click HERE to learn more.
