Professional advisor Sam C. Munhollon has been assisting clients with their financial goals for more than 40 years. He considers himself a "financial physician," making sure that every aspect of his client's financial plans are properly coordinated and in working order.

Since 2004, Sam's held the position of senior vice president with Hilltop Securities Inc. in Oklahoma City and was previously with Morgan Stanley for 17 years. When he made the move, his daughter Janelle Skelton, a certified financial planner (CFP), joined him as a partner in the firm.

Sam says he's been working with the Oklahoma City Community Foundation for nearly his entire career. The partnership started after several of his clients were looking to fulfill their philanthropic needs and what the Oklahoma City Community Foundation offered fit the bill.

"The Oklahoma City Community Foundation gives the donor the ability to establish and manage a charitable fund without the complexities or compliance issues of setting up a private foundation," Sam says. "Through a donor advised fund, they can still be involved in setting the parameters in which the fund is to make charitable distributions in order to ultimately ensure that their charitable intent is maintained."

Over the years, Sam has brought many clients to the Oklahoma City Community Foundation to accomplish their charitable giving goals including Dr. Ruth Mershon. An anesthesiologist who practiced in Hutchinson, Kansas, and Oklahoma City before retiring in 1996, Dr. Mershon included a bequest in her will to establish an endowment fund with retirement fund assets. After her death in 2000, the Ruth Mershon Fund was created through her bequest. Her family recommends grants that support her charitable interests including annual scholarship awards through our Trustee Scholarship Initiative.

Sam says, "Mr. Kirkpatrick was so generous in establishing the Oklahoma City Community Foundation." He added, "The operations are efficient and the staff is excellent. They are able to look at a potential donor's situation and help guide them on the most tax-efficient way of structuring their gift. It's just phenomenal."

The Oklahoma City Community Foundation can provide sample bequest language to help your clients with an estate gift. Donors may contribute to existing funds such as scholarships or create endowments that meet their needs. For more information on how we can help you help your clients accomplish their charitable giving goals, contact Joe Carter at [email protected] or 405/606-2914.
