Grants awarded to 57 Mobile Meals providers in central Oklahoma
OKLAHOMA CITY - The Oklahoma City Community Foundation Trustees recently awarded $28,800 in grants to Mobile Meal programs in central Oklahoma. Those receiving grants include 55 churches that provide meals to homebound elderly through Mobile Meals of Oklahoma County as well as a $2,500 grant to Edmond Mobile Meals and a $1,500 grant to Norman's Meals on Wheels. The individual grant amounts varied based upon the number of weekly meals provided by each site. The grants will help providers offset the cost of food and transportation.

This is the fifth consecutive year that the Trustees have awarded grants to the Mobile Meals program in Oklahoma County that operates through volunteer programs based at churches like South Lindsay Baptist Church in south Oklahoma City. The church's Mobile Meals program is in its 35th year and serves an average of 3,100 meals a year to homebound elderly residents.

Edmond Mobile Meals currently serves 1,000 meals per week to homebound elderly and disabled individuals of all ages in Edmond and the surrounding area. The Norman Meals on Wheels program serves more than 300 clients a day.

"Mobile Meals is a vital service for homebound individuals," says Nancy B. Anthony, president of the Oklahoma City Community Foundation. "In addition to providing nutritious meals, the personal contact by caring volunteers is very important to many of those served through the programs."

Since 2008, the Oklahoma City Community Foundation Trustees have awarded more than $145,825 in grants to support Mobile Meals programs in central Oklahoma.
