Supporting businesses by lending good money to good businesses!

The Easter season is almost upon us again and I hope everyone is excited to celebrate flowers, bunnies, and Easter egg hunts under sunny skies!

You might notice that Take Your Daughters to Work Day is happening on April 23rd.  This happened in our family some years ago when my parents introduced my sister and I to our company -- and we liked it so much that we are still here serving our clients' factoring needs!

Thank you for your continued subscription to our newsletter, and welcome to our new clients and subscribers!  If you enjoy this issue of our Building Bridges newsletter, please forward it to others.

Sharing the blessings of Easter!

This Month in History

The Pony Express was founded by William H. Russell, William B. Waddell, and Alexander Majors. Plans for the Pony Express were spurred by the threat of the Civil War and the need for faster communication with the West. The Pony Express consisted of relays of men riding horses carrying saddlebags of mail across a 2,000-mile trail. The service opened officially on April 3, 1860, when riders left simultaneously from St. Joseph, Missouri, and Sacramento, California. The first westbound trip was made in 9 days and 23 hours and the eastbound journey in 11 days and 12 hours. The pony riders covered 250 miles in a 24-hour day.

Eventually, the Pony Express had more than 100 stations, 80 riders, and between 400 and 500 horses. The express route was extremely hazardous, but only one mail delivery was ever lost. The service lasted only 19 months until October 24, 1861, when the completion of the Pacific Telegraph line ended the need for its existence. Although California relied upon news from the Pony Express during the early days of the Civil War, the horse line was never a financial success, leading its founders to bankruptcy. However, the romantic drama surrounding the Pony Express has made it a part of the legend of the American West.

Did You Know?

In 1830, a French tailor by the name of Barthelemy Thimonnier patented a sewing machine that used the chain stitch; the first such machine to replicate sewing by hand.  By 1841, he had a factory with over 80 machines and a contract with the French army for uniforms.  However, the factory was destroyed by a riotous group of French tailors who were afraid the sewing machine would spell the end of their trade.  Thimonnier never financially recovered and died penniless at the age of 63.

Bananas Are Big Business

According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, bananas are the 8th most important food crop in the world, and make up a global industry of more than $8 billion in annual trade.  Bananas are grown in more than 150 countries, which produce over a hundred million tons a year. The US is the top importer of bananas in the world, importing almost 4 million tons per year (over 65% of American households buy bananas every week, making bananas the most popular fresh fruit in the U.S.).  The Produce Marketing Association  estimates that each American consumes about 28 pounds of bananas, or 80 medium bananas per year.  Banana Republic didn't always signify khaki-clad prepsters -- the term was used to describe Central American countries whose economies and politics were highly dependent on the (often corrupt) banana business.

National Walk to Work Day

... is held the first Friday of April and was declared in 2004 by U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Tommy G. Thompson.  The day encourages Americans to walk to work.  You should walk on this day at least 30 minutes.  Sustained walking sessions for a minimum of 30 to 60 minutes a day, five days a week, reduces health risks and has various overall health benefits such as reducing the chances of cancer, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, anxiety and depression, and increases overall life expectancy.  Walking also increases bone health, especially strengthening the hip bone, and lowering the more harmful low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, and raises the more useful good high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol.

Thoughtful Thoughts

To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others; to leave the world a little better; whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived.  This is the meaning of success.

- Ralph Waldo Emerson  (1803-1882)

April Humor

A young couple moved into a new neighborhood.  The next morning while they were eating breakfast, the woman saw her neighbor hanging her wash outside to dry and said, "That laundry is not very clean, she doesn't know how to wash correctly.  Perhaps she needs better laundry soap."  Her husband looked on, remaining silent.  Every time her neighbor hung her wash to dry, the woman made the same comments.

A month later, the woman was surprised to see a nice clean wash on the line and said to her husband, "Look, she's finally learned how to wash correctly.  I wonder who taught her this?"  Her husband replied, "I got up early this morning and cleaned our windows."

And so it is with life ... what we see when watching others depends on the clarity of the window through which we look.
