Percy's Blog

Dear Parents,

Each winter we invite Gateway School alumni back to campus to re-connect with their peers and former teachers, to hear about what is new at the school, and to listen to an alumni speaker about his experiences since leaving Gateway. This year we were fortunate to hear from JoeBen Bivert (class of '85, and Gateway's first legacy parent) about his experiences at Gateway School, and his life beyond. JoeBen spoke to our faculty and alumni about his belief that through perseverance and a singular focus one could achieve anything.

JoeBen's inspirational presentation reflected on four lessons he learned during his time at Gateway School that helped him to remain curious about several different disciplines and to enjoy learning. Below is what I took away from his presentation to our teachers and former students:

Be Happy To Be You.

In fact, the you that you are now is the only you that you will ever be. The soonerthat you accept the true beauty and potential inside of you, the sooner you willrealize that potential and be able to share your gifts with the world.

Learning Is Fun.

As a child, JoeBen spent a lot of his of unstructured time playing outdoors and was fascinated by how things worked. He turned this curiosity into his passion and later his purpose, as he pursued a career as an engineer.

Dream Big.

He encouraged our students to dream big at an early age, and to never set or acceptlimitations. He recognized that for most of us the capacity to dream big diminishes the older we get when our "escape velocity" from life's responsibilities is much  harder.

You Can Do Anything.

JoeBen described himself as a late-reader, and explained that his teachers nevermade him feel that this was any sort of deficit. With loving and supportive teachers around him to reassure him of his intelligence and creativity, coupled with his owntenacity, he came to believe he could achieve anything he set his mind to.

I have written in the past about the value of grit, perseverance, and resilience, the importance cultivating one's passion, and the necessity of nurturing a child's natural curiosity. JoeBen is an extraordinary example of what can happen when these characteristics are embodied in one individual.

Thank you for sharing your story with us.

Science Fair Judging

Our Middle School Students are hard at work on their 2012-2013 Science Fair Projects and we are looking for qualified adults to participate in the Middle School Science Fair as judges.  You do not need to have a student in the middle school.  We just ask that you have a science or engineering degree or experience in some branch of science or engineering.

Students' projects will most likely be put into the following categories: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Psychology or Health Science, Environmental or Earth Science, and Engineering.  The judges assess students based on their effort, design, research and experimentation, and the communication of their results.  We provide a grading rubric for you to follow and a list of questions to ask in order to make your judging as smooth as possible.

Our middle school students spend almost three months working on these projects and the culmination for most of them is the Gateway Science Fair.  The judges play an integral part in making this process such a great experience for the students.  Please consider volunteering a few hours of your time to help make this year's Science Fair a success.

Who: Gateway Community Adults looking for a way to support the science program

What: Gateway Middle School Science Fair

Where: In the Gateway Middle School classrooms

When: Wednesday, February 6th: 12:15- 3:00pm (lunch provided)

If you would like to be a judge for the Science Fair, or if you know someone that can, please let us know.  We look forward to hearing from you!
Miss Representation - Movie Screening
Thursday January 31st, 6-8:30pm

Gateway School is holding a screening of Miss Representation on January 31st from 6:00 - 8:30 for the parents of 5th to 8th graders.

Miss Representation (90 min; TV-14 DL) uncovers a glaring reality we live with every day but fail to see. Written and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, the film exposes how mainstream media contribute to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America. The film challenges the media's limited and often disparaging portrayals of women and girls, which make it difficult for women to achieve leadership positions and for the average woman to feel powerful herself.

After the screening, please join in a discussion facilitated by Lucie Hemmen, Ph.D., Santa Cruz author, psychologist, and former Gateway parent.
Family Science Night
Wednesday Feb. 6th, 5:30pm

Family Science Night is an evening of science fun for the whole school.  There are two sessions (5:30-6:30 and 7-8pm).  A list of workshops offered (with recommended grade level appropriateness) and a sign up sheet will be sent out soon.

Parents: are you interested in conducting a scientific experiment or presenting at this year's Science Night?  In the past we have had parent-led sessions on the science of salt, air powered rocketry, electricity, sound, light....  We have many experiments that are ready to go (just need a parent to lead the session), and we are always open to new ideas for experiments.  We'd love to talk to you about it.  Please contact parent Joe Bryan at: Joe@rattlebrain.com for more information!

Feb. 20, 2013, 7pm
Crocker Theater, Cabrillo College

Reserve your free ticket now for the next in our series of community lectures as we welcome Dr. Yong Zhao to Santa Cruz on February 20, 2013. Dr. Zhao is currently a full professor and the Presidential Chair and Associate Dean for Global Education, College of Education at the University of Oregon. Dr. Zhao's current work focuses on designing 21st century schools in the context of globalization and the digital revolution.

We are very excited to be partnering with Cabrillo College, Mount Madonna School and York School to bring Dr. Zhao to Santa Cruz.   Dr. Zhao will be presenting his latest book, World Class Learners: Educating Creative and Entrepreneurial Students, where he proposes that the current measures of education quality through standardized testing are misleading and that the so-called high performing education systems do not actually produce the kind of creative and entrepreneurial talents we need.

Seating is LIMITED. Click here to RSVP and reserve tickets.

2013-14 Financial Aid

Financial Aid for the 2013-2014 School Year:  Financial Aid application season is now open. Please click here to download the complete 2013-2014 financial aid packet which explains how to file an application through the FAST system (Financial Aid for School Tuition). This packet can also be downloaded from the Admissions page of the Gateway School website. When you are ready to file your FAST application, you will find a link to the FAST online application itself on that page of our website.

In order to apply for aid, you must file the online application through FAST and you must mail to FAST a copy of your complete 2012 tax returns.  We recommend that parents start preparing now to get their 2012 taxes done as early as possible during the month of February 2013. The deadline for completing your FAST application is February 15th and the deadline (postmark date) for mailing your tax return to FAST is February 25th.   As long as you meet these deadlines, your application will be considered for the first round of financial aid awards (the round in which the bulk of our financial aid budget is awarded). If you are divorced, separated or never married, please be aware that each parent must file a separate (but linked) FAST application and each parent must submit a copy of his or her complete 2012 tax returns to FAST. Please contact Rima in the Business Office at x 308 if you have any questions.
