Tamale Sales Thursday After School!

The Class of 2013 will be once again selling delicious tamales, home-made by Yolanda Martinez, this Thursday after school to support their trip to Washington D.C.. Supplies are limited, first come - first served until they are gone. We will NOT be taking pre-orders.  $2.50 each or $24 per dozen. Look for them at the front of the school.
Bake Sale for Jacob's Heart

Our Bake Sale was very successful. We raised $340.00 for Jacob's Heart. A BIG thank you to all of our Student Council Representatives who provided baked items for this event and to everyone who supported the bake sale. We are so pleased that our school is contributing money to this organization.

Clear Billing Accounts before Break

Be Sure to Clear Your Billing Account by Winter Break: In the paperwork that you signed to enroll your child for the 2012-2013 school year was an explanation of the need for parents to pay off their billing accounts in full by Winter Break. This requirement comes from policy set by the Gateway School Board of Trustees which states that no student may attend any Gateway School program when school reopens in January unless his or her account has been paid in full, up to date. Please pay careful attention to the billing statement dated November 30, 2012 that was sent to you at the beginning of December week. The total balance shown on that statement must arrive at the Main Office by December 31st at the latest.  If we do not receive payment in full by this deadline, your child will not be cleared to resume attending Gateway School with his or her classmates on January 7th. Please contact Rima in the Business Office at x 308 if you have any questions.

Dr. Yong Zhao - World Class Learners
Zhao
Feb. 20, 2013, 7pm
Crocker Theater, Cabrillo College

Reserve your free ticket now for the next in our series of community lectures as we welcome Dr. Yong Zhao to Santa Cruz on February 20, 2013. Dr. Zhao is currently a full professor and the Presidential Chair and Associate Dean for Global Education, College of Education at the University of Oregon. Dr. Zhao's current work focuses on designing 21st century schools in the context of globalization and the digital revolution.

We are very excited to be partnering with Cabrillo College, Mount Madonna School and York School to bring Dr. Zhao to Santa Cruz.   Dr. Zhao will be presenting his latest book, World Class Learners: Educating Creative and Entrepreneurial Students, where he proposes that the current measures of education quality through standardized testing are misleading and that the so-called high performing education systems do not actually produce the kind of creative and entrepreneurial talents we need.

Seating is LIMITED. Click here to RSVP and reserve tickets.
Science Fair Judging

Our Middle School Students are hard at work on their 2012-2013 Science Fair Projects and we are looking for qualified adults to participate in the Middle School Science Fair as judges.  You do not need to have a student in the middle school.  We just ask that you have a science or engineering degree or experience in some branch of science or engineering.

Students' projects will most likely be put into the following categories: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Psychology or Health Science, Environmental or Earth Science, and Engineering.  The judges assess students based on their effort, design, research and experimentation, and the communication of their results.  We provide a grading rubric for you to follow and a list of questions to ask in order to make your judging as smooth as possible.

Our middle school students spend almost three months working on these projects and the culmination for most of them is the Gateway Science Fair.  The judges play an integral part in making this process such a great experience for the students.  Please consider volunteering a few hours of your time to help make this year's Science Fair a success.

Who: Gateway Community Adults looking for a way to support the science program

What: Gateway Middle School Science Fair

Where: In the Gateway Middle School classrooms

When: Wednesday, February 6th: 12:15- 3:00pm (lunch provided)

How: Contact LeighAnn Work at leighann.work@gatewaysc.org or 423-0341 X 313

If you would like to be a judge for the Science Fair, or if you know someone that can, please let us know.  We look forward to hearing from you!
SAVE THE DATE!

Gateway School is holding a screening of Miss Representation on January 31st from 6:00 - 8:30 for the parents of fifth to eighth graders.

Miss Representation (90 min; TV-14 DL) uncovers a glaring reality we live with every day but fail to see. Written and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, the film exposes how mainstream media contribute to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America. The film challenges the media's limited and often disparaging portrayals of women and girls, which make it difficult for women to achieve leadership positions and for the average woman to feel powerful herself.

After the screening, please join in a discussion facilitated by Lucie Hemmen, Ph.D., Santa Cruz author, psychologist, and former Gateway parent.

Keep your eyes out for more information after winter break.

2013-14 Financial Aid

Financial Aid for the 2013-2014 School Year:  Financial Aid application season is now open. Please click here to download the complete 2013-2014 financial aid packet which explains how to file an application through the FAST system (Financial Aid for School Tuition). This packet can also be downloaded from the Admissions page of the Gateway School website. When you are ready to file your FAST application, you will find a link to the FAST online application itself on that page of our website.

In order to apply for aid, you must file the online application through FAST and you must mail to FAST a copy of your complete 2012 tax returns.  We recommend that parents start preparing now to get their 2012 taxes done as early as possible during the month of February 2013. The deadline for completing your FAST application is February 15th and the deadline (postmark date) for mailing your tax return to FAST is February 25th.   As long as you meet these deadlines, your application will be considered for the first round of financial aid awards (the round in which the bulk of our financial aid budget is awarded). If you are divorced, separated or never married, please be aware that each parent must file a separate (but linked) FAST application and each parent must submit a copy of his or her complete 2012 tax returns to FAST. Please contact Rima in the Business Office at x 308 if you have any questions.
