Percy's Blog - Cyber-safety Talk

Lori Getz, a Los Angeles-based cyber-education consultant and technology specialist, spoke to our parents last night and to our 7th and 8th graders today about ways to remain safe online. Ms. Getz offered an insightful look and, at times, chilling picture of the digital landscape our children traverse. Lori discussed with the audience how we all create a digital footprint on the web through our e-mail correspondence, online purchases, musings on social media websites, gaming habits, and use of photo management sites to share memories with our family and friends. These contributions to the digital world can help merchants, advertisers, aggregators, trolls, and predators gain information about you and your family.

REMINDER - school is in session next Monday & Tuesday Nov. 19 & 20
It's Day 71 of our Campaign and we are at:
100%  Board and Faculty participation
and
78%  Parent participation

Our grandparent appeal was mailed this week.

The full participation of all members of our adult community -- faculty, board, parents -- is important to reach our funding goals. We all have the privilege to support our wonderful school through time, talent, and treasure. It takes all three to create a successful school year.

Here are 3 reasons we have a goal of 100% participation:

When we apply for foundation grants, or ask for support from any organization or business, we have a much stronger case if we demonstrate the highest level of support from those closest to our mission. If external organizations do not see that then they are not inclined to want to invest in our school.

We know we can accomplish great things together. Every year we must raise the money to cover the tuition-cost gap, and it feels better to each of us to know that everyone is pitching in at their own level.  We are deeply grateful to receive each and every donation -- ranging from $10 to $25,000 -- for the Annual fund. It feels far more fair to all if everyone does their part.

This is what we want to demonstrate to our children...that as adults in the community we ALL do our part. When asked, we step up and participate, just as we want our children to do in their lives.

As the holidays approach and we reflect on all we are grateful for, here are a few things the Gateway Development members make note of.

  • We are grateful for all the families at our school who enrich our school community by being members of Gateway School.
  • We are grateful for the efforts and talents brought forth every day through the classrooms, school-wide activities, parent events (e.g., Lori Getz's cyber-safety presentation), and giving to others outside our community (e.g., coat drive, food drives).
  • We are grateful for the pledge commitments made by 159 families who have already participated in the Annual Campaign.
  • We are grateful for the belief in our own community that we can reach 100% parent participation... in past years several classes have shown that we CAN do this!
We invite the remaining families to join in with a pledge today and help us realize our goals!

You can always donate on-line at https://www.gatewaysc.org/give/donate.html

Many thanks!
After School Language Classes

Gateway School and Aux Trois Pommes are partnering up to offer language classes after school beginning in January. Aux Trois Pommes offers many different languages and we need your help picking the ones that will be the most popular.  Attached is the link that takes you to the studies that show the benefits of learning a second language if you need more convincing!  http://www.sclanguagecenter.com/benefits

Please take this short survey and let us know if you are interested in language classes after school! Thank you.

Second Harvest Holiday Food Drive

At Gateway School, the middle school students complete 25 hours of community service per year, beginning in 6th grade as a group project.  Each year the 6th grade students organize and run their class service-learning project, working with the Santa Cruz County Second Harvest Food Bank.  Last year, our school raised nearly 8,000 pounds of food for families in need.  Our goal this year is to match last year's contribution.

The food drive will run from November 26th through December 20th.  Our students learn the value of contributing to their community and cooperating with others. One dollar provides three pounds of food, and cans with protein are valued most.

According to Second Harvest, over 2.8 million people in the state do not have reliable access to enough food, meaning that more than one in three state residents is on the verge of need at any given time.  The Santa Cruz county food bank serves over 55,000 clients per month.  Your support of this service-learning project is appreciated both by the 6th graders and the greater Santa Cruz community.
GET YOUR THANKSGIVING PIES

The Class of 2013 is continuing their fundraising efforts for their trip to Washington DC in May by selling PIES after school on both Monday and Tuesday before Thanksgiving break.  We will have a table at the curb and back church lot.  There will be a variety of pies from different sources, first come first served.

Thanks for your support!

EAP Meeting - Tuesday Nov. 27th

Come to Gateway School's Environmental Advisory Panel and help us Green Gateway!

Our next meeting will be held in the library on Tuesday November 27th, 3:30-4:30.

We are excited about one of our newest campaigns, to "green" our school events and we will begin our work at this month's meeting.  We will also plan our zero waste lunch week and continue working with the 8th graders to help them create an environmental club, reduce MS trash, set up a green school's student training, and provide them with any advocacy and support they need.

Come to the November 27th meeting - meet with our Middle School student council members and hear their ideas and give input on green events and future campaigns for the 2012-2013 school year.

Seasonal snacks are always served!  Please contact Caprice at 479-4769 or caprice@cruzio.com with any questions and to get on our email list.
Comic Book Fair
Tuesday & Wednesday Nov. 27-28, 2:30 - 3:30

Comic books (e.g. Archie and Sonic Hedgehog) will be on sale (price range $2,50 - $5.00) after school at the picnic tables on Tuesday 11/27 and Wednesday 11/28 by Gateway students.  30% of proceeds will go to support the Gateway School library.
Tuition Payments & Financial Aid

Semi-Annual Tuition Payments Due This Month:  If you chose to pay your child's 2012-2013 tuition  on the Semi-Annual payment plan, your second Semi-Annual payment is due by the close of business (5:00 pm) on Friday, November 30th.  We recommend that families start making arrangements for their Semi-Annual payments now so that the required funds are sure to be available by November 30th. The charge for this tuition installment appears on the 10/31/12 billing statement that was sent to you at the beginning of November. Your Semi-Annual tuition installment must be paid in cash or by check.  No late fees will accrue on this tuition charge as long as your payment arrives in the Main Office by 5:00 p.m. on November 30th.  If, however, your payment arrives after this deadline, a late charge of $20 will immediately accrue to your account, the discount you received for agreeing to pay tuition by this due date may be cancelled, and your child's enrollment in the School for the remainder of the 2012-2013 school year may be jeopardized.  Please contact Rima in the Business Office at x 308 if you have any questions.

Financial Aid for the 2013-2014 School Year:  Financial Aid application season will open this Monday, November 19th.  Beginning Monday, you will find an updated financial aid packet on our website that will explain how to file an application through the FAST system (Financial Aid for School Tuition). Our website will also be able to link you to the FAST online application starting Monday.

In order to apply for aid, you must file an online application through FAST and you must mail to FAST a copy of your complete 2012 tax returns.  We recommend that parents start preparing now to get their 2012 taxes done as early as possible during the month of February 2013. The deadline for completing your FAST application is February 15th and the deadline (postmark date) for mailing your tax return to FAST is February 25th.   As long as you meet these deadlines, your application will be considered for the first round of financial aid awards (the round in which the bulk of our financial aid budget is awarded). If you are divorced, separated or never married, please be aware that each parent must file a separate (but linked) FAST application and each parent must submit a copy of his or her complete 2012 tax returns to FAST. Please contact Rima in the Business Office at x 308 if you have any questions.
Girls on the Run Program Coming Soon!

The two words that best describe Girls on the Run are "FUN" and "RUN".  Every aspect of this program is geared toward helping girls feel good about who they are - physically, emotionally and socially. We are excited to offer this great program to the 3rd-5th grade girls at Gateway this coming spring!

Girls on the Run will meet on Mon and Wed after school from 3:15-4:30 for 10 weeks beginning the week of March 4th.  The girls will train at the school twice weekly for a 5k run/walk event to be held on Saturday, May 18th in Vasona Park, Los Gatos.

Registration will be online only and will open on Saturday, December 1st at 8:00am.  Space is limited to 15 girls, and girls will be registered on a first come/first serve basis.  Once a program is full, you will have the option of being added to a waitlist.  There is no mail in or phone registration option.  Registration information will be available on our website in November if you have questions about the process. The registration fee includes registration for the final 5k run/walk.  Scholarships are available.

For more information, please visit our website at www.gotrsv.org or contact Sari Mundon sari.mundon@gatewaysc.org or Michele Claussen michele.claussen@gmail.com

We hope to see your girls out on the field this spring!
Día de los Muertos Ofrenda

Thank you all for your contributions to the Gateway School Ofrenda. It made it special to have your photographs, notes and memorable objects.  We will take down the Ofrenda after school on Tuesday November 20th.  Please stop by the school before then to collect your personal items.  Thank you again for making this year's project so successful.
