I have always approached Halloween with a hint of skepticism and apathy. As a child, I was very clear about the reason - I DON'T LIKE BEING SCARED. Sure, like most kids, I enjoyed gorging myself on Pixie Stix, Big League Chew, Nerds, Sugar Babies, Dum Dums, Sweeties, and Zagnut bars after my parents inspected them. As I grew older, and candy became less of an attraction, my friends turned to silly pranks and ghoulish stunts meant to frighten our peers, and wreak havoc on our neighborhood. Again, this seemed to me to be destructive and SCARY, albeit for different reasons. Now, Halloween seems to give some adults license to publicly engage in silly or even debauched behavior. This can be a whole different kind of frightening.

Exciting news.....
A family at Gateway, who wishes to remain anonymous, has offered a match challenge for all parents to consider....if you increase your annual fund gift this year, this family will match your increased amount dollar-for-dollar. For example, if last year you donated $500 and this year you donate $750, the donor will match the additional $250, so that the school will get $500 new dollars! Second grade teacher Patricia will be speaking at First Friday, followed by a performance by Ixtatlutli (White Hawk) Aztec Dancers.  The dance group, whose purpose is to keep children off the streets while teaching them Mexica traditions (Pre-Columbian culture), has been in the Watsonville area for over 25 years. We are so fortunate to have them perform for us!
