New Fall Adventures

Although fall is typically associated with change - of weather, of the leaves' color, of elected officials - the season represents continuity within schools.   As teachers, we recognize the constants - nervous students; awkward stares and silences as they settle into different classrooms and new routines; lost binders, lost pencils and calculators, and, of course, lost homework assignments.   We also know that a new year brings new initiatives, new faces, old friends, and a common purpose; fall is new for us, but always the same.

Next fall at Gateway School will feel a little different. The routines will be the same, and our students will again arrive with their unique blend of bravado, trepidation, silliness and play. But, for the first time in 27 years, Gateway School will open its doors without our beloved Liz Cass. After, forty-seven years of working with children in Santa Cruz, Cupertino, Hayward and Japan, Liz has decided to retire from teaching and enjoy time with her family and friends. Gateway School is lucky to have had Liz in charge of caring for and educating our kindergartners over the years. Liz clearly is a gifted educator, but more importantly, she is a model of a curious and astute learner. She is fond of telling me each year, "I learned so much from my students last year, I cannot wait to see what this year's class teaches me."

FALL FESTIVAL - Thank yous!

Thank you to Laura Lucas for coordinating this year's Fall Festival and to the many parent volunteers who helped in the grade level booths and activities.  It was a huge success!  Many many thanks to those that helped - it was a huge team effort - and would not have been possible without the extra help with ticket sales and set up, clean up and all the other little things like face paints & lemonade, pumpkins and hay, cleaning up sticky shave ice and hot popcorn machines, getting watermelons, etc.  Special mention to Karen Hovekamp, Joanna Blattberg, Tera Martin, Beth Mitchell, Andrea Rosenfeld, Sally Fauske, Virginia Rodriguez, Rob Holombo, Bobby & Andrea Hultzen, Shiva Hurvitz, Christa Manor, Tetsuro Okabe, Mary Henderson, Donna Cattera, Colleen Sullivan, Jeremy King, Michael Harrison and Martin Ortega.  And a huge shout out to the 7th grade community service workers - they were very helpful and looked like they had fun doing it!

Our Life Lab pumpkin and plant sale at this weekend's fall festival was a huge success thanks to all the generous donations and conscientious helpers!  Thank you to parent Nada Duna from Valley Crest Nursery for the beautiful violoas and drought tolerant perennial plants and to alumni parents Molly Slete and Luen Miller from Monterey Bay Nursery for the ever popular succulents!
Also a huge thank you goes out to the hard working students Yssy Wallace-Wells, Aya Allan-Colacicco, Nikko Wilson, Zoey Carmichael, and Ruby Rorty, and to the equally hard working parents Amy Erlewine, Freny Cooper, Mark Haynes, Scott Polland, and Steve Wolfman.  We couldn't have done it without your tireless help!

Congratulations to Jaiden Wolfman and Brandyn Cavin (Haley's husband) for guessing the weight of Monster and Gigantor and winning the pumpkins!

Gateway and Gault Elementary students will come together for a collaborative craft workshop, co-sponsored by Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History. The workshop will be held at Gault Elementary and will feature middle school volunteers. The fruits of this collaborative workshop will be used to create a mini-Ofrenda to be displayed at the Museum from October 23rd - December 4th.

To RSVP for the Gateway Craft Party or to register for the Gateway/Gault Craft Workshop, please send an email to jessicadelgado@me.com. Registration for the Workshop will be limited to 15 Gateway students.

If you are interested in volunteering for any of the above events please email jessicadelgado@me.com.

All parents should have received our Annual Giving request in the mail last weekend. Please help us reach our goals by making your PLEDGE* next week during Pledge Week!  Board volunteers will be at the curb at drop-off and pick-up most days in order to make it easy for you to just drive through with your pledge envelope and drop it off -- no need to even get out of the car!

The tuition-cost gap this year is $1,500 per student.  We have 100 days between the start of school and just before winter break to reach our goal of $290,000 and 100% participation. Here's how the Campaign is going so far:

DAY 21  The Board of Trustees kicked off the Campaign at their
September Board meeting - every year our
                Board reaches 100% participation!
DAY 28  The Faculty & staff Campaign started -- every year our
                wonderful faculty reach 100% participation!
DAY 38  The Parent Campaign letter was mailed, and pledges
started coming in on-line over the weekend!!!
The past few years our parents have reached into the low
90% for participation, with several classes
reaching 100%. Lets make it school-wide this
year....100% in 100 Days! YES we can!
DAY 48   Pledge Week starts, Monday October 22nd - bring your
                pledges in next week!

On-line pledging is possible any day! Go to https://www.gatewaysc.org/give/donate.html

Many Thanks!

* Tax-deductible gifts and pledges are accepted during Pledge Week.  Pledging means you do not have to write a check or pay anything right now - you can just pledge an amount to give at any point during the school year (through June 30, 2013)!

Join Gateway School's Environmental Advisory Panel and help us Green Gateway!
Our next meeting will be held in the library on Tuesday October 23rd, 3:30-4:30.
