Brother/Sister Program Spotlight

Laura and Lisa are coming up on their fourth year of being matched together! Lisa started with Laura through the school mentor program and then in June 2013 they took it to the next level and became part of the Brother/Sister Program!

Laura is a kind, caring, sincere friend. Laura loves to do things and has a happy personality. Laura and Lisa love  spending time together and going to West sporting events like football, volleyball, basketball and softball. Laura has become an athlete herself by being involved in volleyball, basketball, softball and now tennis. It has been fun for them to go to these games together and it is exciting for Lisa to see Laura excel in sports herself. They have had a great summer together with tubing at Lake Washington, going to the State Fair and celebrating Laura's birthday with her friends.

But the most miraculous and rewarding part for Lisa in the Brother/Sister program is seeing the growth in Laura's outgoing personality, building confidence in herself, and achieving strength from personal adversity when it arises! Lisa and Laura have been blessed to be matched together!

Thank you YMCA!

STRIDE

The new STRIDE Program had its' kickoff day this past week and was a huge success. Between 2 program sites, 45 boys, 3rd-5th grade, will develop character and confidence through physical activity, team work, giving back to the community and life-long healthy living habits. STRIDE coaches gave out the first 4 dog tags to 4 boys and their faces were priceless when they were honored, not for how fast they ran or for winning, but for how they demonstrated good character. They are preparing to run a 5K after the 11 weeks and we are excited to help teach boys to become young men who KNOW what is right, CARE what is right and ultimately DO what is right.

Just like apples and oranges, and other favorite pairings, some things go better together.

Join our 4 week partner challenge!

Find a friend, relative or co-worker who also wants to establish a healthier lifestyle and forget the cookies and milk, chips and dip and sweet and sour.

Get Better Together at the Y.

November 2 - November 29
$20 per team (2 people)

Register at the YMCA starting October 20

This program is open to both members and non-members.

Give to the United Way Today!

The Y's school-based mentoring program is seeking more area business to "adopt" a neighborhood school.

The adoption would put the business alongside area firms such as Bemis, Verizon, Ridley, Carlson Craft, and the YMCA where employees agree to serve as mentors to kids one hour a week during lunch or before hours at the school.

This program is sponsored by the Y and the United Way.

Businesses and individuals interested in helping out can contact Cheryl Hamond through email here or by calling 387-8255.
