TRAIN BOLDLY, FINISH STRONG
MANKATO MARATHON
|
In October, thousands of dedicated and determined runners will be changing our local landscape as they participate in the 2013 Mankato Marathon. The event hosts an array of races including relay, half marathon, 10K, 5K, KidsK, even a toddler trot and diaper dash to encourage runners of all ages and experience levels to join in the fun.
This year, the Mankato Family YMCA's Executive Director John Kind will be running 13.1 miles as he participates in the half marathon. John ran the full marathon for the Inaugural Race and is already planning on running the full marathon, 26.2 miles, again next year to celebrate his 60th birthday.
John began running in college. When asked if he was "good", he burst out laughing and guffawed a "No!" He shared that running is about the feeling. The endorphins you get from finishing, the satisfaction you receive when you push past a point where you want to stop, and of course the health benefits. Running keeps your heart healthy, keeps weight down, and enforces a healthy lifestyle.
|
To assist in training, John uses MapMyRun, a mobile app to push himself further... literally. With MapMyRun, he creates local routes and increases the distance as he progresses with his training. The app allows you to map your routes, track your progress, time, and distance, and even helps you keep track of your food so you ensure proper nutrition. John also recommends the "Runner's World Big Book of Marathon and Half Marathon Training." The book is dedicated to strategies, inspiring stories, and ultimate training guides. He uses the book to guide his training and increase his mileage as the marathon nears. John's advice to first time marathon runners? Get plenty of nourishment during the race. Water, gels, and food will keep your energy up and prevent you from wearing out. The Mankato Marathon is hosting multiple events October 19th and 20th with the full and half marathon occurring the second day. If you're not running, consider becoming one of the thousand volunteers that makes this event a success. Make sure to stop by the Y's booth at the Sport Health Expo on Saturday the 19th at Myers Field House. The Expo is a great place to see what's new in the running world! Visit the official Marathon website to learn more: www.mankatomarathon.comGood luck to all the runners! Train boldly and finish strong!

LIVESTRONG AT THE Y
CANCER SUPPORT
|
Cancer is a life-changing disease that takes a tremendous physical and emotional toll on those affected. The Y and LIVESTRONG have joined together to create LIVESTRONG at the YMCA, a research-based physical activity and well-being program designed to help adult cancer survivors reclaim their total health. LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is a free 12-week program offering cancer survivors specialized physical fitness training designed to help reclaim their health and well-being following a cancer diagnosis. Participants work with Y staff trained in supportive cancer care to safely achieve their goals such as building muscle mass and strength; increasing flexibility and endurance; and improving self-esteem. By focusing on the whole person and not the disease, LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is helping people move beyond cancer in spirit, mind and body. The program is open to members and non-members alike, at any stage of their diagnosis and is set to begin in October. To learn more about LIVESTRONG at the YMCA, contact Joy Leafblad at 345-9813 or

What began as a passionate conversation between local area youth has grown into a full blown company.
On Thursday, August 29th, the student-led "Me for You" company blessed many local youth at the Y with free fashionable backpacks full of school supplies. The premise is simple: purchase a high quality backpack and they
donate a backpack full of school supplies to a student in need.
The student leaders share on their website:
"There is a definite unmet need in our community, in our state and nation. We believe there are tons of students who need our help and we also believe that there are tons of people who want to help them. With MeForYou, we can bridge the gap between these two groups and make a positive change in both of their lives. "
Visit their website to learn more about how you can support these outstanding students and your community. |
