New year, new lobby
Lobby remodeling on track for Jan. 1

Lobby construction

No doubt you've seen what used to be the front lobby, lately a busy construction area with little resembling the cozy lobby of yore.

But that non-stop construction means a fairly quick result - the new lobby will be complete by year's end. Members will enjoy more social space, more efficient use of desk operation and less waiting time at the entry.

In the meantime, thanks for the patience shown so far with the relocation of desk operations.

He's a Handball Wizard
Tyler Stoffel's achievements noted by North Kato City Council

Tyler with key

Theoretically, Tyler Stoffel can go anywhere he wants in North Mankato.

On Dec. 3 the North Mankato City Council honored the 16-year-old Mankato West Student and Y member with the Key To the City. The honor came in recognition of Stoffel's success in handball throughout the world.

Trained at the Y and playing since he was 8 years old, Tyler has since amassed a number of top honors in handball tournaments worldwide. His record includes three local championships, four state championships and nine national championships.

In October at a tournament in Ireland, he competed against 72 players and took third place. He's soon headed to Chicago for another tournament, this time accompanied by another young player trained at the Y -- his 8-year-old brother Nathan.

The handball training came from their dad, John, along with Mike Wells. The two men coach handball at Minnesota State University, Mankato.

"The handball community is so proud of the local, regional, national, and world achievements that Tyler has accomplished," said Wells.

YMCA Program Director Laura Diaz echoed the sentiment.

"Tyler is a terrific handball player," Diaz said. "It's an inspiration to future handball players to know that hard work and practice can lead to success."

Get your business in the Y

front desk digital signage

Have you noticed the digital message boards in the Y lobby and the Life Center? Not only are these display terminals a more colorful and attractive way to provide members with the latest Y news flashes, it's an affordable way for businesses to support the Y while reaching potential customers.

For $100 a month, your professionally designed message will rotate among messages at the rate of six times per hour for every hour of operation. Crunching the numbers, that adds up to 2,735 showings of your message per week, and a rate of .03 per  message.

Interested? We're limiting the number of sponsors to 20, so stop by the lobby and Life Center and have a look. Email or call
to sign up at 345-9807.

CAST A VOTE FIR THE Y

Be sure to stop by Drummer's Garden Center before Dec. 19 to vote for the Y's entry in the tree-decorating contest.

The store sponsored a contest among several area non-profits including the Y.

Our intrepid decorating team (Liz Hageman and Laura Diaz) clearly put time and talent into the Y's entry.

The payoff is a nice cash prize for the Y, but it's dependent on votes. So if you're in the Drummer's area (across from Menard's), please drop in and vote. You can vote once a day, so vote early and often!

Y's Club tree sale on through Dec. 16

Still in the market for a real Christmas tree? Buying one from the Y's Club sale will also help youth programs at the Mankato Family YMCA.

This year the annual sale of trees and wreaths takes place through Dec. 16 or until all the trees are sold.

The tree lot is located at Madison Avenue and Victory Drive near McDonald's.

Hours are noon to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturdays and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays.

The tree sale is one of three major events The Y's Club organizes as fundraisers for youth programming at the Y. Others are the SmashFest volleyball tournament and the corn roast, both in summer months.

The Y's Club is accepting new members. For more information on joining, email Kerry Koepp.
