That's what members are seeing with the new locker rooms that will open for use Nov. 5

"The women's locker room is lovely, a very nice layout," said 20-year member Julie Larson. "The new aerobics studio is marvelous, too. Really good lighting."

A special unveiling Nov. 1 gave donors to the 2012 Capital Campaign a sneak peek at the changes their contributions have brought about so far. What followed was a three-day open house for all showing off three new locker rooms, wider hallways and an aerobics/yoga/multi-purpose room.

Members and visitors heaped high praise on the look, the space and the convenience of the new rooms. Women in particular found the increased number of private shower stalls, sauna, lobby and layout of the adult women's locker room to be exciting.

Work shifts now to remodeling the former Men's Adult Locker Room and the Men & Boys Locker rooms. With both of those now closed for remodeling, adult men will temporarily use one of the new locker rooms.

For space considerations, members and guests under 18 are offered the unisex Family Locker Room.

The new locker rooms no longer have lockers that require keys. Members are encouraged to use their own padlocks, which the Y has available for sale. As before, towel and locker kits are available as well for an additional cost to regular membership rates.

Lobby remodeling to begin Nov. 19

You'll be seeing some construction going on right away when you enter the Y beginning Monday, Nov. 19, as front lobby remodeling begins.

It's part of the remodeling effort that will create a more inviting social space as well as a more effective layout for member services.

The construction is expected to be completed by Dec. 31 or shortly thereafter, with the front desk operations relocated to a spot to be determined soon.

As always, we appreciate your patience with this project, and are confident you'll like the results.

Enjoy some 'Extra Trimming' on Thanksgiving Day

If a big meal's on your plate for Thanksgiving, imagine the guiltlessness of starting the day with a well-rounded workout at the Y.

Such is the idea with "Extra Trimming," the one-hour, one-day-only boot camp-style fitness class that offers a good workout at the top of the day. It's an hour you'll be glad you invested regardless of meal plans.

While the Y will be shut down for the holiday, this special class will be open to participants from 9:15 to 10:15.

If interested, be sure to register ahead of time by calling 387-8255. Cost for the class is in the form of donations, and the suggested donations are $5 for members, $10 for non-members. The forwarded to the Salvation Army, which kicks off its bell-ringing season for the holidays.

ANNUAL SHOE DRIVE STILL KICKING

There's still time to donate to the YMCA/District 77 shoe drive.

Y this year is again working with the Mankato School District to collect gently used running shoes to donate to students in the district.

Specifically, we're looking for kids' running shoes for roughly grades K-6. Runners are the ideal source for these shoes as they tend to discard theirs after 300 miles or so. These used shoes are nonetheless perfect for kids -- and their families -- who need shoes for school but can't afford the retail price of new shoes (let alone the two pair required by many schools).

This year, the shoe program will also go toward helping kids who are in area shelters.

The Y has a collection basket in the lower level near the fitness center. You can't miss it. Thanks for your help.

THE STRONG KIDS CAMPAIGN

Every year the Y holds its fundraising campaign to provide funds that allow low-income families to join our community.

It's a member-led endeavor called The Strong Kids campaign. This year, the Strong Kids Campaign took a lower profile than usual because of the $3 million Capital Campaign (see lead story).

We appreciate the help many of you are providing for construction. Yet the need to fulfill our mission to accomodate low-income families remains.

More than 16 percent of our membership appeal to us for financial assistance.

Contributions to the Strong Kids Campaign make fulfilling those needs possible. They are accepted at the Y or online.

Y's Club tree sale begins Nov. 20

In the market for a real Christmas tree? Buying one from the Y's Club sale will also help youth programs at the Mankato Family YMCA.

This year the annual sale of trees and wreaths will take place from Nov. 20 through Dec. 16 or when the trees are all sold. The tree lot is located at Madison Avenue and Victory Drive near McDonald's.

Hours are noon to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturdays and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays.

The tree sale is one of three major events The Y's Club organizes as fundraisers for youth programming at the Y. Others are the SmashFest volleyball tournament and the corn roast, both in summer months.

The Y's Club is accepting new members. For more information on joining, email Kerry Koepp.
