SWEET!
serving corn
The Y's Club will host its 54th annual corn roast from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 6 on the lawn of Mankato West High School.

In addition to delicious Anderson sweet corn, the club will be serving up hot dogs, ice cream, chips and soft drinks.

This year, tickets will not be mass-mailed but will be available at the gate on the day of the event. Cost is $7 for adults and $3 for kids (check on this).

CONCRETE RESULTS

  cement truck

Visitors to the Y during the morning of July 24 were treated to the site of a truck piping in cement through the roof of the building.

From a hole in the roof, the cement made its way down to two of the lower level locker rooms - the adult women's and new women's and girls as well as a new exercise area.

Here's the latest on the progress of the construction:

  • The Family Locker room is expected to be completed by Oct. 1.
  • The women's locker rooms are expected to be finished around Nov. 1, as will the new program space.
  • The adult men's locker room and the men and boy's locker rooms will both undergo remodeling beginning Nov. 1 and will be completed around mid-March.
  • The front lobby remodeling is expected to be done sometime between November and March. We are working to pinpoint a more exact date.
...And your help is still needed

If you're a Y member and have yet to contribute to the Y's remodeling, please consider giving.

Remodeled locker rooms and lobby, increased parking space, new cost-saving heat, air con, electric and plumbing are among the comforts we're providing members through this project. Please consider helping with a contribution.

INTRO TO BODY PUMP - FREE

Body Pump class

Classes are forming for Les Mills Body Pump, the group exercise that combines barbells, a little cardio and a lot of motivating music for full-body workout.  The Y is launching these classes in the fall, and registration is open.

The classes will be led by fitness instructors who completed the required training.

To introduce members to the program, the Y has been offering free classes that have led to some of the regular sessions available in fall being sold out.

"Everybody's loving it," says Candee Deichman, one of the instructors leading the intro classes. The class' focus on different muscle groups is a key selling point, she says, as is the rockin' atmosphere of the class.

"They like the music - the music's upbeat, fun and different from our typical classes."

The free classes continue on a drop-in basis through Aug. 16. Dates and times are:

Aug. 1 at 4:30 p.m.

Aug. 2 at 8:30

Aug. 7 at 5:40 p.m.

Aug. 8 at 6:45 a.m.

Aug. 9 at 12:15 p.m.

Aug. 13 at 4:30 p.m.

Aug. 14 at 12:15 p.m.

Aug. 16 at 8:30 a.m.

Stop in for a sample and then register for fall classes. (And register for those quickly as  each class is limited to 28).

Get your business in the Y

front desk digital signage

Have you noticed the new digital message boards in the Y lobby and the Life Center? Not only are these display terminals a more colorful and attractive way to provide members with the latest Y news flashes, it's an affordable way for businesses to support the Y while reaching potential customers.

For $100 a month, your professionally designed message will rotate among messages at the rate of six times per hour for every hour of operation. Crunching the numbers, that adds up to 2,735 showings of your message per week, and a rate of .03 per  message.

Interested? We're limiting the number of sponsors to 20, so stop by the lobby and Life Center and have a look. Email or call
to sign up at 345-9807.

Consider making mentoring part of your business

As the Y's school-based mentoring program enters its second year, so do opportunities to help make a nice difference in a kid's life.

Program coordinator Cheryl Hamond is encouraging businesses to adopt a school, as several have in the program's inaugural year.

Businesses including Ridley, PerfecSeal, Carlson Craft and the Y each provided employees to be school-based mentors to individual kids in nearby schools. The mentor and the child would usually meet over the lunch hour for games and conversation at the school.

"It's been a success, and you can measure that by just watching the kids light up when their mentor meets with them," Hamond says. "And by how the mentors feel about this new, rewarding role in their lives."

Similarly, the community-wide mentoring program, Brother/Sister, is seeking volunteer mentors. Male mentors are especially needed.

Businesses and individuals interested in helping out can contact Hamond through emailhere or by calling 387-8255..

Heart Walk nominees sought

Do you know someone who's affected by heart disease?

As the Mankato Heart Walk approaches, we'd like to focus attention on a few people who can vouch for the difference education can make when it comes to heart disease (and the work of the American Heart Association).

The hope is that by sharing their name and story, we can enlist others to take part in the fundraising walk on August. 28.

Please send nominations and contact information here or call 345-9807.
