A GREAT CLASSROOM ACTIVITY

No matter what class you are teaching, the emphasis for the future will be healthier food while keeping the same deliciousness that the eating public deserves.

Here is a great classroom activity:

Propose to your students that they need to remake a familiar dish to be more calorie/health conscious.

Then you develop a lesson plan in order to teach these principles!

The twist?  You need to use a Unilever product (e.g. Hellman's Mayonnaise; Knorr bases, Lipton Tea) which you can find by going to their website, www.unileverfoodsolutions.us.

The payoff?

The Grand Prize will be $1,000 cash to you the instructor plus a complimentary registration to the CAFÉ Leadership Conference  June 18-20, 2015, in Niagara Falls, New York.

You will help the chef prepare the winning dish for the opening night reception and then you will be a 20-minute presenter at the Trends portion of the Conference to your fellow instructors.

But wait!

Two runners up will each receive a complimentary registration to the Conference as well-a $399 value!

Go to http://cafemeetingplace.com/scholarships-awards/unilever-contest for full contest information.

Deadline is April 1.

What a great classroom activity!

ANOTHER CONTEST FOR YOUR STUDENTS

Maple Leaf Farms is offering a grand prize of $2,500 for the winner of the 2015 Discover Duck Recipe Contest.  Four additional finalists will win $500 each plus a chef's knife kit.

Complete contest rules and entry forms can be found at www.mapleleaffarms.com/chefcontest.

AND the grand prize winner's sponsoring school will receive $1,000 worth of duck product.

Another WIN-WIN for your students and you!

2015 CAFÉ LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE

This year we will be offering some limited Master Classes for attendees of the Leadership Conference.  You can:

  • Explore methods that are tried and true to teach math to culinary students (back by popular demand!)
  • Have a hands-on experience with butchering and learn about the new pork cut nomenclature (and take home a beautiful knife)

The classes will run from 1-4 p.m. on Thursday, June 18th.  Plan to come in early!

Registration and hotel information can be found at  http://cafemeetingplace.com/cafe-events/2015-leadership-conference .  A tentative agenda is at http://cafemeetingplace.com/pdf/events/agenda_leadership15.pdf

AWARDS/CONTESTS AND OTHER WAYS TO PAY FOR YOUR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT!

The Idaho Potato Commission and its annualInnovation Award recognizes programs and/or individuals who have designed a part of their program to be something different or something bigger than what was required.

The CAFÉ/Kendall College Green Award is an exciting boost each year to the many programs who have reached out to farmers or to new markets or to methods that all help us teach in a more sustainable fashion.

The (new) Sysco Educator of the Year Award is designed to recognize that individual who has gone above and beyond in their thinking, their energy, their devotion to foodservice education.

The (new) Unilever Foodsolutions Contest is recognizing that healthful food preparation is here to stay and we should recognize someone who can re-engineer a familiar recipe and then write a Lesson Plant to help other teachers with that same goal.

Go to www.CafeMeetingPlace.com for details of these Awards and Contests.  There are significant benefits and note that they are open to both high school and college-level programs and individuals!
