CAFE NEWS
February 23, 2015

Dear Educator,

CAFÉ is proud to offer several Award programs which allows you to showcase your accomplishments above and beyond what your curriculum calls for.

What about you, the teacher who has been pushing sustainability and other greening efforts in your program?

Have you been recognized as an outstanding teacher by your students and/or administration?

And have you ever brought a contest into your classroom in order to teach a valuable lesson in nutrition and healthy recipe modifications?

  • INNOVATION
  • EXCELLENCE.
  • FARMS/SUSTAINABILITY/GREENING
  • HEALTHY AND NUTRITIOUS

If any of these words "speak" to you and your/your program's accomplishments, then please, apply for one of the CAFÉ Awards as outlined below and on our website.

If not you, then WHO?

Some past winners have

  • Set up relationships with farmers; encouraged innovative re-cycling efforts; changed their menus
  • Organized cross-curriculum and inter-departmental efforts
  • Figured out a way to consistently teach international cuisines
  • Introduced students to "deliciousness" through healthy recipe modifications
  • Discovered how to get their students involved with the teaching process
  • And much more....

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION IS APRIL 1, 2015.  Full details of the Awards/Contests can be found on our website at  www.CafeMeetingPlace.com.

These are not scholarships...these are Awards for what you are already doing!!

Please don't bemoan that you don't have any professional development funds.  These Awards give you free registrations to the CAFÉ conference in addition to CASH.

Sincerely,

Mary Petersen

TRANSPORTATION FROM BUFFALO AIRPORT TO NIAGARA FALLS

Here is the information about shuttles from the airport to Niagara Falls.  If you choose not to rent a car (because  everything is within walking distance of the hotel including Canada!), then we encourage you to reserve a van shuttle for the 30-40-minute ride.

SOMETHING FOR FUN!  THE RACLETTE CHALLENGE:

Emmi Roth and the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board sponsored a teacher's internship last summer in Wisconsin.  The winning teachers are featured in this YouTube video which is a lot of fun to watch!

AWARDS/CONTESTS AND OTHER WAYS TO PAY FOR YOUR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT!

The Idaho Potato Commission and its annual Innovation Award recognizes programs and/or individuals who have designed a part of their program to be something different or something bigger than what was required.

The CAFÉ/Kendall College Green Award is an exciting boost each year to the many programs who have reached out to farmers or to new markets or to methods that all help us teach in a more sustainable fashion.

The (new) Sysco Educator of the Year Award is designed to recognize that individual who has gone above and beyond in their thinking, their energy, their devotion to foodservice education.

The (new) Unilever Foodsolutions Contest is recognizing that healthful food preparation is here to stay and we should recognize someone who can re-engineer a familiar recipe and then write a Lesson Plant to help other teachers with that same goal.

Go to www.CafeMeetingPlace.com for details of these Awards and Contests.  There are significant benefits and note that they are open to both high school and college-level programs and individuals!
