CAFÉ is proud to announce its keynote speaker for the 11th Annual CAFÉ Leadership Conference.  Gissur Gudmundsson, CMC, President of the World Association of Chefs Societies (WACS) will lead off the Industry Relations Day at the Conference which will be held June 18-20, 2015, in Niagara Falls, New York.

Chef Gudmundsson was born and raised in a small fishing village in the extraordinary West Fjords of Iceland.

He has served in leadership positions in several culinary associations and from 1995 to 1997 was Director for the only private culinary school in Iceland.  As a WACS approved judge, he has travelled to all parts of the world to judge in international level competitions.

Chef Gudmundsson also managed to be an accomplished restauranteur as the chef and owner of Restaurant Geysir in Oslo, Norway from 1989 to 1993 and Restaurant Tveir Fiskar in Reykjavik Iceland from 2000 to 2007.

Gissur is a strong promoter of good ethics, advancement of the culinary arts for all WACS member countries as well as camaraderie between chefs.  His motto "Rethinking Tradition" has enabled WACS to move forward efficiently during his service as President for WACS.

OOPS!  WE HAD A PROBLEM WITH OUR FEBRUARY 2 E-BLAST!

We didn't get the e-blast out to our entire subscriber list and only just found out!  Please accept our apologies!

The Mango Board's offer to all foodservice instructors was a part of that e-blast and we definitely wanted to get it out to you as a special D.E.A.L. (Deal for Education and Learning) of the Week!

Briefly write up how you use mango in your curriculum (or class).  There will be a drawing for THREE lucky winners who will receive:

  • A box of mangoes
  • A beautiful mango towel
  • A cutting mat
  • AND a lip balm!

Susan Hughes from the Mango Board will be happy to hear from you at susan@susan-hughes.com with an extended deadline until February 23rd.  If you did receive our e-blast and sent your paragraph in already, rest assured that it will be a part of the drawing!  Feel free to email Susan to ask her if she received it.

Again, our apologies to you, our subscribers and to the Mango Board.  We are fortunate to work with such great sponsors who are willing to share their products with you as you help them learn how (or if) you use their products in your classrooms.

AWARDS/CONTESTS AND OTHER WAYS TO PAY FOR YOUR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT!

The Idaho Potato Commission and its annual Innovation Award recognizes programs and/or individuals who have designed a part of their program to be something different or something bigger than what was required.

The CAFÉ/Kendall College Green Award is an exciting boost each year to the many programs who have reached out to farmers or to new markets or to methods that all help us teach in a more sustainable fashion.

The (new) Sysco Educator of the Year Award is designed to recognize that individual who has gone above and beyond in their thinking, their energy, their devotion to foodservice education.

The (new) Unilever Foodsolutions Contest is recognizing that healthful food preparation is here to stay and we should recognize someone who can re-engineer a familiar recipe and then write a Lesson Plant to help other teachers with that same goal.

Go to www.CafeMeetingPlace.com for details of these Awards and Contests.  There are significant benefits and note that they are open to both high school and college-level programs and individuals!
