The City of Ferndale will begin its East Nine Mile Road multi-modal and resurfacing project the week of April 4, 2015, bringing more street design continuity by improving the walkability and bike connectivity to the east side of Downtown Ferndale.
The $1.6 million road project is funded by the City of Ferndale Major Roads and Federal Highway SAFETEA 3R Grant and will consist of approximately 1.2 miles of road resurfacing of East Nine Mile Road from Woodward to West End. At completion on or before August 13, 2015, the project will convert the four-lane road to three lanes, add landscaped median buffers and bike lanes, improve pedestrian crossing points and ramps, and some curb and drive apron replacements will be coupled with the fresh new resurfacing of the road.
During construction, the road will be reduced two lanes in either direction for crews to safely work and complete the improvements. Both pedestrian and vehicular traffic will be impacted, but all cross streets, parking lots and business access will remain open, which should limit the amount of interruptions to normal business. Pedestrian access at certain crosswalks will be impacted, including the pedestrian crossings across East Nine Mile at the east corners of Woodward will have no access for a four-to-five-day period during this project. Other intermittent pedestrian access will be restricted along East Nine Mile throughout the construction. Driveway access will be constructed in halves or in the case where a business has two drive approaches, they will construct them one at a time. Crews will maintain access by providing temporary gravel drives. SMART bus service will continue on East Nine Mile at Woodward and Hilton stops, but all other stops are subject to the bus driver's discretion. Bus landings will be available during construction.
