What's So Special
About Those Parking Bays?
When the Design Committee of the Ferndale DDA, led by landscape architect and volunteer Design Chair Stacey Tobar,  started working on the West Nine Streetscape, they were guided by multiple goals: It had to have the look and feel of the rest of West Nine; it must be biker, walker, auto friendly; it must be beautiful and safe; AND it must be GREEN.

Fortunately, Tobar is knowledgeable in all the latest and greatest and suggested
that the new on-street parking bays would be ideal for permeable concrete.  Not only would such an application help solve drainage issues, it would qualify the project for additional "green' funding.
So that's what's happening and the process begins with the underlayment.   Currently crews are filling the bays with a special aggregate  mix that will become a solid but permeable base for the top coat of concrete.  Once complete, you'll hardly be able to tell the difference  but now you now that once again Downtown Ferndale went leading edge to be the best.
Thanks Stacey and the rest of the design team!

Hello Partners!

Beautiful weather and hard working crews have kept How the West was One on schedule. Although we are in the homestretch, we are going to have to "hold our horses" before getting too excited about a completion date.  Trust me, we are chomping at the bit, too.

All the benches, trash containers, bike loops have arrived or are en route but we won't see them on the sidewalks until AFTER the landscaping install, after October 1 per MDOT's requirements.  We can't wait to see how great it's going to look, but we'll have to.

In the meantime, we'd like to offer more assistance to all our West Nine businesses.  We will be doing a Pony Express Newsletter to our entire email list of 1900+ consumers, listing you as Gold Rush survivors and encouraging EVERYONE to remember West Nine when they are shopping.  Any suggestions you may have/would like to do, please contact us and we'll work with you.  We can also schedule a cash mob and help promote it for your business.  Working together, we can help you get to November.

The week ahead:

  • Parking bays being prepped with special aggregate for permeable concrete application
  • Electrical going full force next week
  • Driveways will be temporarily interrupted for electrical connections
  • DQ curb install scheduled for next week, driveway to be completed after holiday
  • Work crews will be off road by 3 pm, Friday, August. 30 for Labor Day weekend, back to work Tuesday morning.

Again, call 248-546-1632 if you have questions, concerns or ideas on how we can assist you.  We are here to help!
