Holiday Cheer Is Here This Weekend!
Downtown Ferndale is the BEST place to celebrate the holidays, especially this weekend when Holiday Ice & Winterfest Market (HI & WM) does a holiday takeover of downtown. Presented by MotorCity Casino Hotel and assembled by the Ferndale Downtown Development Authority, HI & WM starts Friday, Dec. 7 at 6 pm when a sky high ferris wheel begins rolling. At the same time, 40+ vendors housed under the Holiday Big Top will be open and ready to serve you as music rings out from the Holiday Stage. At 7 pm, the official Woodward Avenue Tree Lighting will launch the entire weekend of fun. (See article at right.)
Saturday is a day of total tradition, dressed up with a bit of urban flair. Santa will arrive atop a Ferndale Fire truck at Schiffer Park at Planavon & West Nine Mile, at 10 am. He'll take requests and pose for photos until noon, break for lunch with the kids at Buffalo Wild Wings, and come back for more photos from 2-4 pm.
At the same time, at Schiffer Park, Santa's reindeer will be resting up for their big trip; and visitors can jump on the Holiday hay wagon for a quick spin around downtown.
"Masterpieces in Ice" sculptures, the work of World Champion Ice Sculptor Tajana Raukar, will be found all around town. Be sure to see all 57, including watching live ice carving demos throughout the day.
On Sunday, on East Nine, youngsters might enjoy a pony ride for a small donation to a new charity -- Horses Heal Hearts; and rumor has it that Santa will be strolling around downtown all afternoon.
There truly will be something for everyone -- from amazing ice carving demonstrations to cool crafts for kids, plus warm welcomes from the Downtown Ferndale businesses who help make this event such a great tradition.
Additional support comes from event partners including Suburban GMC Buick, Buffalo Wild Wings, Rosie O'Grady's, One-Eyed Betty's, Credit Union One, Gifflels Webster Engineers and Blumz by JRDesigns. THANK YOU all!

Besides Ice & Rides
Historical Tour & Cool Special Events
Home for the Holidays is one of the best gifts anyone can enjoy, so this year a dedicated group of history-minded Ferndalians decided to showcase some of the city's finest homes for the holidays with a Historic Holiday Tour. Proceeds from the event, which costs $15, will benefit the Ferndale Historical Society and the Ferndale Community Foundation. The tour leaves from the Ferndale Historical Museum at 1651 Livernois and ends at Elegance by Design in Downtown Ferndale. Be sure to get in on this first ever and rediscover the joy of home for the holidays. Tickets available at the door. Booked for the Holidays -- If you're more of a book fan, head over to the Ferndale Public Library and enjoy its Holiday Book Sale. The sale, with complementary hot chocolate, runs from 11 am to 5 pm and proceeds benefit the Friends of the Ferndale Public Library. That Other Claus - After his Tree Lighting appearance on Friday Night, Metalliclaus will be spreading holiday jeer all day Saturday. Be sure to catch his brand of holiday happiness from noon to 5 pm at Detroit Comics, where they'll also be accepting donations from Children's Hospital. Another Way to Give -- Credit Union One is now, and has been, a Toys for Tots collection site in Downtown Ferndale. This venerable financial institution will get you into the holiday spirit by providing a close-to-home drop location for gifts that give happiness to children who would otherwise go without. Simply walk in and drop in. |

It Begins With
A Tree Lighting!
In what is sure to become a new tradition, this year's Holiday Ice & Winterfest Market will begin with the
"official" lighting of the Woodward Avenue Tree.
Festivities take place at 7 pm at the median at Woodward & Nine and feature Mayor Dave Coulter leading the countdown, with help from Special Guest Metalliclaus and members of the Ferndale High School Marching Band. There will be caroling and hot chocolate and the Ferndale Godmothers will be collecting toys, if you're so inclined to donate.
Once the tree is lit, everyone's invited to ride the ferris wheel, shop the vendors at the Winterfest Market and, of course, shop all of Downtown Ferndale to get your holiday going!
