MLK Jr. Day of Service: 1/19/2015   

 

MLK Jr. National Day of Service is Monday, January 19th and once again, Hands On will be coordinating a special service event with Land of Sky Regional Council Senior Corps. MLK Jr. Day is an opportunity for our community to answer Dr. King's question, "What are you doing for others?" Hands On encourages volunteers to make it a day ON, not a day off!


The event will include multiple stations where volunteers can participate in family-friendly projects that directly support local nonprofits and the people they serve. Volunteers will have the opportunity to create:

January: National Mentor Month  
January is National Mentoring Month. Hands On is proud to partner with several outstanding local nonprofits who provide opportunities for caring adult volunteers to connect with our community's young people. Research by the Harvard School of Public Health and MENTOR has shown that mentoring is linked to improved academic, social and economic prospects for young people.  When matched through a quality mentoring program, mentors can play a powerful role in providing young people with the tools to make responsible decisions, stay focused and engaged in school, and reduce or avoid risky behavior.

Hands On Managed Projects

Flex Icon Flex Projects are done-in-a-day projects led by a Hands On Volunteer Leader. Most Flex Projects take place on evenings or weekends and last 1-3 hours. Flex Projects don't require an ongoing commitment or any advance training, and many are family friendly! 

Portable Project Icon
Portable Projects allow you to volunteer any time or place you want.They're easy to do on your own or with a group. Consider getting your family, friends, faith community, or co-workers together to help with a Portable Project.

The Girl Scouts invites volunteers to help support the Girl Scout "Cookie Cupboard"!  Greet troop leaders seeking to restock their cookies, help count and load cookies into vehicles, and write receipts to document cookie transfers. Morning and afternoon shifts are available. Learn more...

Want to help inspire and prepare girls in 3rd - 8th grade for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy choices?  Become a Girls on the Run coach (mentor)!! Must be female and 21+ years of age. No running experience necessary. Support the girls by running or cheering at the end of session 5k run. Serve as role models for young girls. Learn more...

The YWCA hosts an Empower Hour Tour every 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month.  This tour gives the community a better look at the people we serve, our community advocacy efforts, and the family friendly atmosphere located inside our walls.  Learn more...
